Oh I didn't make the link between pro ball & powerball. I have a powerball, I think I ordered it on Amazon, but you can get them from quite a few places. Personally I find it increases the painin my forearms as you have to grip harder the faster you turn the ball/rotate your wrists. You're meant to build the speed up & up to develop strength in your wrists and hands, but I find it increases my pain in that area.

Hi Everyone,

I have just received my NSD Powerball whgich was recommended to me by my hand surgeon to help with gaining strength in my hand, wrist and fingers. I have only tried it a couple of times but I have already got used to working it and look forward to getting higher scores as I get more used to it (I ordered the one that includes a digital counter that shows you how many revs you are doing and how much power you are producing. It did make my lower arm really ache after jsut a couple of goes, but I am willing to ngive it a try and if it helps me to avoid an operation on my thumb/wrist - all the better.

I know this is an old post, so for those who don't know what a powerball is, her is a link to what medical bods say about it and it's use for rehabilitation:

http://www.powerballs.com/medical.php

I will let you know how I get on with it over the coming weeks,

my bf bought one about 2yrs ago- I just couldn't get that thing going :duh: , trying made my wrist v sore (felt no effect further up arm) and once it felt like it had subluxed my wrist... I gave up on it.
(bf fared somewhat better, but never really got the swing of it either= it's just lying about)

oh and be v careful with that starter string- I got it 'lost in the ball' and it took ages of fiddling, traipsing through sites to get it back out.

maybe I should try it again, now that my shoulders are better (no idea whether that would influence it)- but wondering... anyone know whether it's ok to use this if you have 'subluxing'/flicking ulnar nerves ?

I'm also wondering... does the statement that you cant 'cheat'(cant use the wrong muscles) with it def also apply to hypermobiles as we seem to be particularly 'good at cheating' ?

tiree- how did you get on with it in the end?
and could you - or could one of the mods- please add the word 'power' to the title, as they now seem to mostly be known as 'power balls'- thanks!

My wrist splints/supports

As for strengthening, I think stress balls are used to strengthen your hands and not so much your wrists, but I think powerballs help strengthen your wrists (they can take a while to get the hang of though) link
modnote: links fixed

Be careful with them, I exercised with it 5 minutes for three days and wrists are still painful. You still have to bend the wrist a bit to rotate the powerball, and tendons might not approve it.

Done. I wasn't reading this thread as I thought it was about gym balls

I gave mine away in the end. They're right that it's not really possible to cheat, but the positions you have to adopt to make it work can be quite stressful - elbow locked by upper arm muscles and rotating wrist against resistance. Doing it in short bursts would be very wise to start with! The faster you spin it the more resistance it exerts, but there's a minimum speed (not very fast) to overcome to make it spin properly. It'll take a little while to get the hang of it but it's not that hard to learn. I didn't like that I wasn't strong enough to start it without the string as it's just another thing to lose...also I wore down one of the bearings by doing it wrong so it got a bit arthritic! I'd consider getting another one but probably not the ones with LEDs in as they're quite distracting :)

My wrist splints/supports

Postby Jezabel » Sat May 07, 2011 5:32 pm

Can I ask how you are getting on with the powerball now? I'm thinking of buying one as my wrists are pretty weak and I struggle with writing for any length of time. Is it very heavy? Would you recommend it?

I'd be grateful for any advice :)

My wrist splints/supports

Postby Jill » Tue May 10, 2011 3:37 pm

I use Powerball occasionally, but couldn't get any proper result with it - my bad wrist starts aching every time I use Powerball, and good wrist - every second one
It also makes my hands shake more than usual, may be it's related with the elbow nerve.
