Congratulations Claire. I'm just deciding whether to sign up for an online photography course since there's nothing on offer near here. My dad has been doing a weekly course for a few years but he's a long way away.

Hey Naama sorry its taken me so d**n long to reply! I wasnt getting the responses to my email!

You dont really need to do a photography course! Its not worth paying the money for to be honest! You can read up about it all on the web! I'd say the only thing you may want to train up on is photoshop but thats only because ive found it so hard to use lol. Not everyone does!

Am self trained and dont use any extra lenses or all the technical stuff people tend to buy! I was actually talking to a guy in our local photography shop and he even said it may take a bit longer to train yourself but your better off and that the amount of money people spend on these courses where their told they need such a lense and such a camera is ridiculous!

But that being said its also great to learn these things on courses as I honestly dont understand all the techinical jargon lol and since meeting my boyfriend a professional photographer I really dont know a whoooole lot that could be useful lol.

Anyways I hope you managed to find a course or you have set about doing photography and you are enjoying it all! Am finally being paid and featured in more places which is fab!

I've joined a course and I absolutely love the challenge of going out and taking photos that fulfill the assessment criteria. I have to say that any equipment I've bought has been my choice - they don't assume that you have any particular kind of camera - you can have a film or digital, compact or SLR. Most of the equipment I've bought is to help my bendy neck and shoulders deal with a DSLR telephoto lens.
I'm just starting assignment 2 and am going to enjoy taking motion pictures. If it was down to me reading up on the internet and actually putting it into practice, it wouldn't happen!!

Aww thats cool hunni!

Am glad its going well for you! Everyone has different ways of learning!
I did start a course a couple of years ago and they were exactly how I said it was, but looks like you've found the perfect course for you!
So what type of assignments are they getting you to do?

My first assignment was 'seeing a subject' so it was focussing in hard on the thing you want to be the subject instead of letting the viewer of the photograph work out what the subject is. The other part of it was taking a part of the subject or the subject from an unusual angle. I am pretty used to the first bit but I have to say I'm not as creative at the second bit.
My next assignment is shutter priority so it's panning with fast and slow shutter speeds as well as focussing on a point and waiting for your subject to 'arrive' at that point and photographing it. The obvious examples are sports, children, water, maybe trees and leaves given the amount it's blowing outside at the moment! I am used to panning with fast shutter speeds when I go motor racing but it will be fun this time around to play around and get different effects from different techniques.
My dad is the one who got me into doing a course. He's been doing a college course for years - the class has stayed together and they've just developed the course to cater for their improving levels of expertise. My dad's done several weddings and has been interested in photography for ever - he used to use the bathroom as a darkroom. I asked him about what made a good or bad course and then looked on the internet, because there aren't any locally, to find ones that fit what I wanted to get from it. For me it was important to be graded so I know whether I'm improving or not. The course I'm doing very much aims to develop your skills whatever the starting point, so if you only got an E grade for your first project because you're new to photography then the aim would be to maybe get Cs or Ds. As I got a B for my first one, obviously my aim is to get As as I progress and personally to rely less on the automatic functions of the camera and to learn about the manual settings.
