Ankle surgery, reconstruction

Postby tireesix » Fri Nov 17, 2006 3:47 pm

I went over on my ankle 6 years ago and ever since it has caused problems...... Finally, my GP paid it some attention and I am now on a waiting list.

I have been told I will spend six weeks in plaster afterwoulds, it might be an over night stay and the op may take a few hours but other than this I have no idea......

Thankyou!!!!!! :D

i tried to be clever and search on the net but there are tons of ways to do the op (but im assuming they eventually have the same result).

i admitted defeat and so i'll just have to wish you good luck instead!

hope it all goes ok. and at least the weather isnt too hot at the moment- being in plaster in hot temps isnt fun!!

Hi not sure about what they will do it would be worth dicussing this with the consultant who is gonna do the op and see what he/she says as some consultants may do it differently from others but I think it will be the same result or try getting hold of the consultants secretary. I hope this helps.

Hi Tiresix,

I have no experience of this operation but I do have a weak ankle myself so know what that feels like. I wish you all the best for the operation and I hope it solves the problem for you.

Incidentally, I was given a brace to wear on my right ankle by the orthtics department at my local hospital and since then I do not "go over" on my ankle nearly as much as I used to before. I did see an ankle surgeon about my instability but it was decided to avoid surgery if at all possible by using the brace (I've already had 13 ops and I have been told to steer clear of any unavoidable surgery in future  ) .

Have any conservative treatments been offered to you or has a decision been made to bypass bracing and go straight for the surgical option?

Take care,

Sue.

Hi I have been advised that due to EDS I am not a suitable canditate for surgery - this is obviously my situation.

My daughter has recently been undertaking extensive physiotherapy as she has considerable difficulties with her unstable ankles and this is involving a very long process of core stabilising exercises to improve general muscles strength and another referral to a podiatrist for suitable orthotic support. This aspect has been posted on the site and a search will bring up threads on it.

If EDS/HMS were able to be cured by surgery I don't think this site would exist. It is unfortunately an incurable condition which can be managed with a great deal of comitment and perserverance on behalf of the sufferor and generally my understanding is that surgery is considered as a very last resort in sufferors. 'our' collagen is weak so using tissue from other areas may not actually be the cure all it may seem. Good luck - it is suggested that any eds sufferor who is considering surgery should gain information from others with the condition. Realistic outcomes of successful surgery are varied and it seems many forum members here and on other sites have endured considerable disappointment following surgery. I would personally be very wary of allowing any surgeon to operate on me if they had not done the procedure on any other eds/hms patients.

I like what nonyanomemory says. My addition would be, be sure to follow their instructions after surgery to the letter (as best you can of course for rehabilitation). Some folks want to try to walk or exercise before the doc says go ahead. Ankles are incredibly complex structures. Their reconstruction is quite an undertaking. (my experience is working in an orthopaedic surgery office - as a clerk, admittedly - and and intelligent person with a great self-interest)

I certainly wish you much luck with it!

Good luck Linzi...

My problem is down to a stupid accident, nobody knows what happened to my ankle, I suffeered social phobia at the time and the hospital was just too much so I just hopped around for a b****y long time.

Now, the Docs won'tt xray it etc because as far as theyy are concerned, if I didn't go to hospital it couldn't have been that bad..... It has only been due to me demanding a referral to hospital that I have got this far.

I have had 2 physios who were only prepared to see me a maximum of twice, their excercises made the joint more unstable. I wear a brace when it is particularly bad but I am still getting pins and needles (which incidentally I am getting more of everywhere else, pain and swelling too).......

I am scared about the op TBH but maybe, I might get a chance to discuss things further when there........

I am having a real bad time with doctors at the mo......... :( They just don't really give me the time of day.
