sleep meds?

Postby gumby » Wed Mar 15, 2006 1:26 am

quick q-- has anyone here been prescribed muscle relaxers (ie flexeril) to promote sleep? What was your experience?
I wake 3-4x/night in agonizing pain (on the really bad days), or just from the pressure of my body on the mattress, like I *have* to turn over (on the good days)... I see the point of giving my muscles a break, but am afraid I'll end up with my joints hurting b/c there's nothing holding them together when I sleep (???)
I don't get to try this stuff 'till Th night so it would be helpful to know what to expect...

Sometimes I have to take muscle relaxants. The one that was prescribed to me has combined paracetamol so that means both my muscles and my joints have a break. You should ask your GP for all the information about your medication if you are still in doubt. They might be much more helpful!

I am on a anti-depressant to help me sleep. It is called Amitripyline and it helps to relax my muscles and this allows me to get to sleep. But the only problem is that i have to take it quite early in the evening (about 8pm), as if I take it any later it makes me to drowsy to drive the next day.

Hi Glynis, you can usually get Melatonin online. It is most commonly used as a remedy for jet lag. It will only get you to sleep but won't keep you asleep.

Take care.

That can't be right coz my son still gets it on special prescription. I know it's being used more for Autistic kids now too.

Sleep

Postby Sandy L » Wed Jun 14, 2006 3:59 pm

Elavil(R) (amitriptyline) and Flexeril(R) (cyclobenzaprine) are chemically closely related, differing, I think, by one methyl group. Each will help you get into a stage III sleep. Not many medicines will do that, and you need it for a restorative rest. With any sleep, you will relax. If you simply roll out of bed and start your day, your muscles may be too relaxed and your brain will panic and snap you to attention to make sure you don't flop all over the bedroom carpet. Spend 30 seconds stretching before even trying to get up. That will set some muscle tone and may spare you 45 minutes of morning stiffness.

Both amitriptyline and cyclobenzaprine are long-acting drugs; you will have morein your body the second night than the first and a little more on the third nightthan the second. Talk to your doctor about half doses if they should prove too sedating. The sedative effect usually diminishes after a couple of weeks, but does not go away.

Melatonin is à good idea because it is in your body al THE time.
And it seems that people with autism make less melatonin inside than "normal" people!
So it is safe to use! Sometimes it works also to me!
Diagnosed when i was 12(HMS).
I've got almost sure EDS (not official diagnosed) but my physio and physiatrist are truly sure!
More I've Chronic Pain Syndrome, PDD-NOS, Migraine.
