This has probably been asked before but here goes anyway

I recently had a gastroscopy which diagnosed a hiatus hernia and gastric polyps - are these common to people with HMS.

Also i regularly loose my voice - I have had speach and language therapy and seen an ENT consultant who thinks the acid reflux is to blame - any thoughts

Thanks

Shona :(

We had something going about voice control and HMS.. can't remember if that was before or after the boards went down though!

I think the jist of it was that HMS can affect your vocal chords, leaving people with a strong singing or speaking voice sounding much quieter and weaker as they got into their thirties and forties. Not sure if it would lead to a total loss of voice though. But no doubt whoever posted it before (can't remember who that was either! Brain like a sieve!) will come and share their wisdom :D

hey there Shona, i'm an O'Sullivan too !!! (i'm in australia though!)

I remember this thread too.... i've loose my voice often, saw the ENT, was diagnosed as having acid refulx causing the voice loss, had the speech therapy (although i wasn't real cooperative with doing my exercises)... but now still loose my voice when i talk a lot or try to sing.

My ENT said there is research to show voice problems are common in EDS... but nothing much in straight HMS.... but hey, they're probably the same thing anyway... hehe.

On meds for the reflux and have raised the head of my bed on bricks so that i'm not totally horizontal at night time... my throat was worst in the mornings before that.

Sorry, not much help !!

Hi,
My daughter is 7 and had a hiatus hernia ,acid reflux and can sound hoarse at times .
Her gastro-enterologist has linked it all with EDS (hypermobility).
Swallowing difficulties are also linked.

Yes the vocal cords can be affected in some patients with EDS. And this reminds me, GP just diagnosed me with reflux this morning. I thought it *could* have something to do with the HMS, but then again my GP doesn't of course.

I'm started meds now- was told to take them for five or seven days, and after that "as needed".. wonder what that will mean in the end, I've been feeling nauseated from the acid in my throat and the bloatedness in my gullet for weeks now. I just wonder if one week of meds will really "ease it down" enough to be able to quit them again. What I read from others they need them for longer than a week. Can anyone fill me in on this one?

Nexium (esomeprazole). Well I'll see what comes of it, if it doesn't work I'll just ring my GP's office- know the number by heart!

I was on Lansoprazole (sp?) for a couple of years and now I'm on Pantoprazole, I take them every day. If I forget to get a prescription and run out I'm immediately in agony again with heartburn. Seems odd that your docs are diagnosing Acid Reflux but only treating it short term!

Throat problems

Postby Guest » Thu Sep 29, 2005 2:29 am

I have been to an ENT several times. When I teach, I sometimes feel as if I lose my breath. I can ride the elliptical for 35 minutes with no problem, and I work out with weights. I don't get out of breath then. I just feel as if my breath goes away when I strain my voice or talk too long.
I also feel like I have drainage and a lump in my throat. I constantly clear my throat.
My ENT said that he thinks a lot of my problem is acid. I have a hiatal hernia and am now on Nexium. I still have the same problems.
I also wonder if TMJ could be my problem. My ears feel constantly stopped up. The ENT said he saw nothing in my ears. When I go to bed at night, I start relaxing my jaws. When I get up in the morning, my neck/throat and ears feel a lot better.
Does this sound like anyone else?

Hey
I for sure have reflux and am on a lot stronger medications then any of you will be on. I was diagnosed with reflux in 4th grade and i am now in 7th. I took every single medication i used to say u name it i have taken it. I even took nexium and im doing a science fair project on reflux.
They say they dont know if reflux is connected to HMS, but i think it is.
I'm going to see my gastrointeroligist tommorow i think [ im seeing someone ] and i will ask her.
And when my project is over i will be glad to share my results.

My projcet is to see if tums E.X. or pepcid complete is a better acid reducer.

Endgodo, this seems a very unusual school project (on medication) I am not sure over here in the UK this would be considered appropriate. I am sorry you have problems with reflux, many with hms do. I am quite surprised that you say you are on a lot stronger medications than anyone else here, as you are 12 years old.

Reflux is horrid so for those that suffer with this I really empathise.

With regard to cyclewifes post - I constantly feel like I have a lump in my throat and my throat feels odd like its dry. I also had post nasal drip at the back of my throat. My doc can't prescribe anything as he doesn't know what causes it. My throat isn't sore, it just feels a bit odd. Doc says its nothing serious and guys at ENT didn't know what it was either. With regard to the TMJ thing - my physio once showed me a trigger point for the TMJ inside my mouth. When he put a bit of pressure on it, it was very very painful, but it did seem to work. It's a point towards the inside of the jaw, near the inside of the cheek - sorry - this is a difficult thing to describe. Your physio will maybe know what I am talking about. When pressure is applied to this point it relaxes the jaw.

Gastro

Postby Guest » Wed Oct 12, 2005 3:49 pm

The only gastro ailment I have is the good ol' IBS.
My dad has A.S. there is a connection between his terrible digestion etc and his arthritus.

Absorbtion of protein from the blood for the functions of the body happens level to the lower back from the intestines. A.S suffers get bad stomachs, because somehow the possible "fusing" of the vetabre, proteins etc all have a connection. Secondly NSAIDS are terrible for arthritus sufferers and their stomaches in general.

I have a supposed blood protein level that is "outside normal levels (but is ok." The doctor never gathered that protein, playing a part in HMS, should be taken seroiusly.

Now I know how often IBS and DEPRESSION is often diagnosed on the back of anxiety/stress (oh boy we wouldnt be so stressed or depressed if docs would listen, eh?). But if the bowel helps process protein, and my joints have a problem because of something to do with protein. And I have bad, bad guts. Shouldn't the docs be looking for connections between IBS/general stomach probs...and HMS. Not just the fact that "she seems to have gotten IBS through stress"

Geez, I'm an anxious, nervous person by personality, DNA everything. Dont you think that if I was gonig to get IBS by 27, that I'd've been prone to it alot sooner, if all it took to trigger it off was "STRESS"?

Sssheesh!

oh no! This sounds like bad news...i have a strong (read loud!) voice - unusually so, both speaking and singing and my range is quite large (i can sing tenor, alto and most soprano notes)...i love singing.

i will be really upset if my voice looses power as i get older. Maybe ths won't happen.

Is the range of notes at all linked to HMS, does anyone know?

i have just seen this post and missed it before... jenny i am also really worried about the singing voice thing!!! i have a HUGE range at least 3.5 octaves, my top note being the 3rd B flat above middle C... not really heard of. I have a really strong voice and have just cried at the thought that i may loose all this... my voice problems have been getting worse lately with loosing my voice more often (since reflux has got worse) and TMJ probs dont help either...

I do wonder though if the range is linked, because my singing teacher was REALLY suprised at how high i could go, and was so shocked she couldn't even tell me she had to show me!!!!!
I really want to get back to having some singing lessons again soon as my sining voice is getting weaker and it is killing me...

take care
