Coronation Street / Izzy's pregancy

Postby greenjadedragon » Tue Jun 26, 2012 9:34 am

Saw this and thought I should update the thread

Basically, Izzy the EDS character in Corrie is going to become pregnant in an upcoming storyline.

It may be interesting to see how they portray this!!

HMSA has been involved in the research! And the reserachers/ story liners are being incredibly responsible in how they portray the difficulies HMS can cause. :D

Oh this is most awesome news. Certain individuals in my life who Do Not Get It are Corrie fans. Hopefully they'll FINALLY get it.

Anything that raises awareness has to be good! Told my mother about the story in corrie as she's an avid fan. Then told her that's what her grand daughter has, her jaw nearly hit the floor. Although we're pretty sure my mum was a bendy, I'm slightly bendy, stacey's the only one to really suffer from it.

I hope it will make it clearer as to what she suffers from as it has been mentioned in the past but very quickly, even I missed what she had for a few months! I hope that they do a big story on how hard it is to get a diagnosis and any help for the child in a few years time too, as im sure most of us mother can relate to that! My son was tested for Downs, but they dismiss EDS, as it isn't common - so therefore he cant have it?? Maybe we should all suggest that our GP's and Rheumys start watching corrie to educate them??

Oh totally!!! Especially orthopedic surgeons. The amount of times Stacey has been dismissed with the "Grown out of it" comments is unreal!!!

If it even raises slight awareness it's doing a good thing. I for years just thought we were all double jointed and was as ignorant as the next person, it's only now that Stacey has it so bad I realise that it could be the cause of my now stiff arthritic joints. Although, I still insist I don't have the syndrome, just some bendy bits!!!

Just watched tonight's corrie - and quite impressed with the story. Loved the bit when doc said that they probably know more than most doctors - well that's coz most doctors have never even heard of it! Bit I found a bit unbelievable was when he said that he had spoken to her EDS specialist, would love to find a GP willing to do some research!  Think it would be a bit more believable to us if he turned round and said something like "oh wait let me look on wiki and see what this EDS thing is, oh you should be fine, it's just being a bit bendy isn't it??"

It started the other night that she is pregnant, but she went to see GP tonight to see about risks etc of pregnancy - so had quite a bit about it in. Mainly in the first of tonight's 2 programs if you don't want to have to watch a full hour - oh and to narrow it down even more - about 12 mins in!!

I'm a Corrie fan. I too loved the bit where Dr Carter said she probably knew more than him about EDS. Pity that wasn't really emphasised and they moved on with the Dr in charge.

However, the rest was rather unreal. Who's my EDS specialist? Getting to see a GP in under a fortnight and a GP under the age of 90 and without a hearing aid and speaking english and not grunting is unreal.

For soapland, generously with a bit of poetic licence it would have been good if Dr Carter, with his back to the patient, shouted this EDS is a self-managing condition, so what are you doing here? Clear off and don't come back. How dare you deprive another patient of my valuable time you selfish person? (thump the table and gesticulate towards the door.) Here, have a prescription for antibiotics and a sick note for 2 weeks! NOW GO! UGH!

 that is probably what most people with EDS would recognise!

I was relieved that they did keep to the information we shared! I was worried that with some poetic licence it would be hugely overplayed but it was good. I know I said I wasnt worried and was confident but this is the media! :D

Really appreciate the running commentary here, Corrie fans. I don't watch the show but as Dad and his wife do it is really handy to know what information is filtering through to them if only so I'll be forewarned when Dad rings with what might otherwise seem random and bizarre questions. ;)
