Dead hands in the morning

Postby KirstyHorsman » Thu Mar 22, 2012 10:20 am

Hiya

I was wondering if anybody knows any kind of supports to wear when you're sleeping, I seem to sleep on my front and twist my hands into the strangest positions when I sleep. I'm 99% sure that this is what leads to my dead uncooperative hands in the morning, even now after being awake over 2 hours they're still feeling not quite right. It seems to be worse if I've not slept well or enough, or have slept too much, so I can't work out if the amount of sleep affects it or if it is squashing my hands into strange positions when i'm asleep!

Once they've woken up my hands seem generally ok, very, very clicky, quite weak, occasional wayward little fingers, but not painful so I dont mind too much! My little fingers are worse than normal, I've just got the other ones crossed that its just a blip and they'll be ok instead of something else I'm gonig to have to live with!

Do any of you find this, and has anyone found anything that helps?

Lots of us have this issue - you want night resting splints. I think BladdyBlah posted a link a page or so back about some that you can buy online. Otherwise you can try and get referred to an occupational therapist or hand therapist and try and get some off them.

Thanks, Wasn't sure if I was just being silly, so will try and sort something out ASAP now I know I'm not! i only recently worked out its because I squish and twist my wrists, so hopefully a few years of dead hands in the morning can finally get resolved!

A few of us who met at the last HMSA residential in 2010 discovered that we all tend to scrunch our hands and wrists up under our chins when we sleep. I think we called it 'the church mouse' pose :eh:

Hi all

I noticed that I was tending to screw up one hand under my chin when sleeping, causing wrist problems in the morning, and I worked out it was because my head needed propping in posiiton. If I prop my head and neck comfortably with pillows and the corner of the duvet folded under, I don't usually use my hands and my wrists are better. It won't work for everone, but worth checking why you are doing it.

Hello all :)

I'm having real problems with sore wrists and thumbs - the base of my thumb (metacarpotrapezoid) pops in and out at will and so do my wrists. I'm having a hard time with physio because it's all so sore and I was wondering if some sort of support would help the pain levels and therefore allow me to do some more physio on them?

I ideally think I'd like something a bit flexible, but supportive enough to stop subluxing? Does anybody know of any supports that incorporate the thumb as well but aren't too intrusive and rigid?

Thank you so much!

Hi all, I have been seeing the hand OT at the local hospital and was given night resting splints for carpal tunnel probs. I fold my hands in on themselves when i sleep so they curl up inwards and apparently that has been damaging the nerve (they have asked for nerve conduction tests) they gave me a set of good old nhs splints which held my wrists in place but compressed my wrist bone on the outside of my wrist and the fabric really rubbed, i tried lining them but it didnt help. Any way I found some great splints on amazon for £12 they are made by wellgate and are for use with carpal tunnel and also night resting splints, I took them to my appt. yesterday to show the ot and she thought they were great and a very good price. They are lined with memory foam and are open on the side where the sore bone is on my wrist. the ot asked me to put them on so she could check for appropriate support and said they were good.

Wellgate Perfect Fit Wrist support £12.99 free delivery from Amazon. they are designed specificly for women as the wrists are smaller, they are adjustable and one size fits all. I found them really easy to put on unlike some others i have where you need four extra hands

Hi,

Does anyone know of any good wrist supports that aren't splints and aren't neoprene? I find the splints too restrictive and they just make my wrist weaker and more painful in the long run. I got a support a week ago which was a neoprene one that wraps around the wrist. It seemed to be ideal as it still allowed my wrist to move a little, and therefore doesn't seize up my muscles, but I've had an allergic reaction to it. I have a perfect support-shaped red mark on my wrist/hand where I was wearing the support yesterday!

Anyone know of anything at all?

Hi

Have a look at the first posts in this thread at the zippy supports. Also, look at the exolite type braces as they allow some movement as they are not tight.

Thanks Rosie and Cracker. I'm not sure those links at the beginning of the post are still valid but I'll have a look on Google for those brands. Seeing the physio on Thurs anyway so can ask them too. Hand is currently not too dissimilar to a snake shedding its skin! :D

e zip up splints at the top of the discussionhave ceased to be - I used to get them but the comapny went. Another place worth a look is Ebay or amazon, amazing what I have picked up there. You may find the physio will be willing to put you onto either Orthotics or an OT, if so they should be able to sort things out for you without a hole in your budget
