Pain Amplification

Postby madmum » Thu Jan 19, 2012 3:22 pm

My son has been told his foot injury has set off pain amplification. The doctor believes the injury has healed but his body is still throwing pain signals. They recommended running items over it(he can do this if no pressure),and tapping it(that is too painful). His physio exercises make the pain worse and the area swells and discolours. Anyone got advice? He and I are desparate.

I know that the desensititization can work for pain amplification, by building things back up slowly. My only concern is - is it really healed? If it was purely just nerve signals and pain amplification then there would be no swelling and discolouring - that sounds like actual inflammation.

That is my concern. He takes naproxen which is an antiinflammatory so he would probably be worse. The desensatising worked with exercise for his knee, with his foot i can gently touch it but pressure causes severe pain. He describes it as a cross between being shot and being crushed at the same time. He says even the pressure of a bandage hurts when he is really sore. He sits with tears in his eyes and cannot weight bare. His sleep is badly affected and he is worse at night after a day at school. He also feels what he describes as crunching and grinding. The doctor said the piece of bone was just an extra a child can have and if it was a fracture there would be calcification from the joint to the broken piece. He said a child would be healed by now from either injury,I do not think he took hms in to account. He had seen the complaint letter to my local hospital and i think he did not want to get involved. Where do I go from here?
