Pins and Needles and numbness in feet

Postby mrsc2b » Sun Dec 04, 2011 9:45 pm

Hi all
I get sciatica nearly all the time but recently my feet and legs have been going dead when I stand still for too long. I'm having my second lot of facet joint injections this week and will mention it to the doc when there but just wondering if anyone else can shed any light? I get the usual numbness and pins and needles when I sit in specific positions (loo etc) but not heard of numb feet from standing. I have to sit down to get the feeling back.

Hiya
Have you had an MRI recently? sounds a lot like a trapped nerve. Do you have any numbness in the genital region? if so you should see a Dr sharpish, especially if it's affecting bladder or bowel too.

I think the sciatic nerve can affect feet too, pretty sure I saw it on a diagram about nerves. I had a numb toe for about a year along with SI problems but it went away on its own. I get an ice burn kind of sensation in the arches and balls of my feet on a regular basis which I'm told is nerve related and it gets worse if I stand still and improves with heat and moving my feet around.
Officially diagnosed with HMS and Fibro 2010 after 6 years of problems.

I used to have pins and needles and numbness in both my feet for a lot of years (ten-ish) and still get it occasionally depending on what I am doing, sitting slouching for example stretching the lower back and SIJs. The nerves to the feet and mainly from the sciatic nerve. So if you have a problem in the L4-S3 area then you can have pins and needles and numbness in the feet from that. When these joints were subluxed it gave me the symptoms in my feet. I've also had injections in my lower back which made the muscles in my feet twitch. Also if your feet are pronated or lax, then that can also stretch the nerves and could explain trouble standing. I haven't found any doctor who knows or cares about numbness or pins and needles.

G.P has referred me to see a consultant at nhnn about the numbness in legs and feet also affects "saddle region" I am having a repeat mRI and nerve conduction tests. I do have degeneration of lumbar spine and L3 has a legion (they think benign) but Sciatica is very apinful at the moment and makes leg quite weak. I think the sciatic nerve can cause a lot of probs as mine goes down into toes and feet. It would be worth someone checking the reflexes in your knees and ankles and feet because that can indicate if there is a problem with nerve damage. When si joints slip they can pinch the nerves too. When we stand our spine compress so a nerve could be getting squashed somehow. I do think it should be discussed with your Doc as it is a new symptom.
best wishes

Thanks everyone. I will mention it to the doc. I've just had 8 steroid injections in my lower back (L5-S1). The last time I had them they only lasted 6 weeks, so the doc is looking into nerve root burning. :/
