It's good to see some people know what I'm talking about, well obviously not good for those of us who have weak immune systems but you know what I mean! I'm forcing down a bit of coconut oil each day at the moment so I'll let you know if it appears to be helping me!

My immune system seems to be all over the place. After a virus at christmas my body went into freefall!! My HMS,Asthma,IBS and allergy symptoms have gone into overdrive. I'm now being tested for auto-immune diseases so hopefully they will get to the bottom of it. Also I work as a teaching assistant in an infant school ( although have been off sick for 6mths) and several staff seem to have compromised immune systems.

Will look into the dietary options. I do take a multi vit and probiotic daily but my diet has changed recently due to an aspirin allergy and oral allergy syndrome. I have to restrict my salicylate intake, and frut, which unfortunately means that there are lots of healthy foods I can't have. Great excuse for eating unhealthy cakes and stuff  but if I think about it maybe I need to monitor what I'm eating more carefully !!!

I am a teacher, so dont know if my immune system is bombarded by all the bugs little people in school have , or its really just that I have an allergy to children lol
But seriously, working in a school makes keeping well with a low immune system quite difficult.
I havent found anything yet that helps, will keep lookin tho.

Infections

Postby bendywendy » Tue Nov 22, 2011 11:07 am

Hi and thanks for reading,

Does anyone else, pick up infections (throat/ water / chest) easily and have difficulty shaking them off?
I struggle to get treatment after 2 weeks, with some GPs, when I haven't responded to antibiotics :wall: .

Thanks :)

I went through a 2 year phase of picking up sinusitis every other month! it was horendous but i seem to have grown out of it...unfortunatly I have now contracted folliculitis in the pressure sores and ingrown hairs under my leg braces and have been put on a 7 week course of antibiotics! then a review then possibly annother 3 months of antibiotics...i think i should have gone to the doctors before it had gotten as bad as it is now..i had stubbornly stuck to antiseptics and teatree washes and antibacterial wipes when really antibiotics were the way forward.
I wonder if anyone else has found alternative ways of dealing with infections, I swapped my antibiotics for sinusitis for lobelia supliments and they really helped after a few weeks

hiya,
I get lots of infections and have great difficulty getting rid of them.... I am also recovering from my 10th round of shingles this year! When I was diagnosed by Prof Ferrell he told me that it is quite common for us bendies to pick things up and take longer to recover, he even wrote me a "to whom it may concern" letter to explain to my employer why I was off sick more than the average person. I find that I can start off with an ear infection and if I dont get antibiotics quickly enough I get much worse ...I ended up with pleurisy once when I ignored a sore throat.

not much advice to give but I can sympathise with you ....

take care and keep cosy

Sorry Prof Ferrell but I don't pick up infections easily. I just have one cold a year. That's enough for me as I can sublux things coughing!

I am definitely prone to sinus, ear and urine infections and it does take me a really long time to fight them off. I always feel that they come at my 'crash' time. My shoulders will be dislocating, joints hyperextending, I'll have a migraine and then I will get one or more infections...I think there is a hormone influence too - perhaps when my body is producing relaxin? I have always felt that my body has just had enough - there is too much going on, I am not going to rest, so it forces me into submission! It is obviously a nightmare for work, but I feel it is my job to try and keep a balance to stop the 'crashes' hitting me so hard. I haven't managed it yet....writing this after a week of dislocations, recovering from a migraine, and after a visit to my GP this morning for a sinus and ear infection! However, looking back over the past month I can see where I have pushed myself so far...with hindsight it is so easy!

If you put the words infection and immune into the search box it brings up a couple of topics - Boosting the immune system is one, there's another about side effects of opiate painkillers too. Might be worth having a look at them. :)

I've gone through phases of near permanent chest, dental or sinusitis for months at a time before too. At the minute I'm doing ok (bar the perma-snuffles of winter) but I have a cold sore threatening... I take it as a sign I need to be taking much better care of myself.

I seem to go through phases of poor immune defence, right now i'm ok apart from a permanent snotty nose. The last time i was really ill was February last year when i had the flu and it took me months to recover fully. I'm prone to sinus infections, cold's, UTI's, chest infections and Kidney infections, and for about 4 years i had ongoing problems with dental abcesses which eventually resulted in me having to have 3 teeth removed because the infection would not go away. All seems well on the tooth front now, i've just had a couple of minor gum abcesses of late which clear up quite quickly.

i feel as thought i have low immunity against things most people shrug off with ease. i think stress is (unfortunately) a major factor for me, but i have always wondered if there was a link.

this is interesting as my youngest child who is the one suffering the most for hypermobility and hypotonia was always contantly sick as an infant and I have resorted in limiting her exposure to other children sending her to c childminder, which has worked to an extent.

I am also hypermobile and i do the same as above, when i am too tired or stressed by body just crashes and I develop week long migraines as well as I pick up anything froma yeast infection to any possible respiratory bug that was floating in the air...

does anyone know the basis for this immunity isssues? did for example echinacea work for anyone?
Tx!
