Ya I got a 2 inch (the package calls it 2 inch but it is more like 1 inch) memory foam topper which I put on a foam mattress to make a really cheap custom bed - building the frame as well so it would be the right height and width. So it cost less than $300 Cdn.

And I figured why stop there since it greatly reduced pain stemming from an L4 fracture. So I chucked out the cushions on my chesterfield and got some foam and another 2 inch memory foam topper. But I haven't upholstered the memory foam since I think the fabric would be too tight and then my heels won't be able to sink into the foam.

And for a pillow for the bed, I removed the stuffing from a cheap polyester filled pillow until it was the right thickness for my neck and added the 2 inch memory foam on top of it. I've spent decades fussing with pillows (using just a corner of one usually for sleeping). Now, no sleeping problems whatsoever.

And the leftovers are wide enough for an exercise mat for doing bridging on a ball etc...

Memory foam made a huge difference in decreasing my back pain and in shoulder pain that was caused by sleeping on a futon.

hi all

i've been thinking of buying a 3" memory foam mattress for my double bed, as i have shocking pain all day and night, as i know we all have, and over the last probably 2 years, i have never slept longer than about an hour-90minutes at any one time (always the pain waking me up  ). i am constantly 'running on empty' and i'm willing to try absolutely anything just even for a few nights good sleep. that's my dream. and to be honest, even if it is ONLY a few nights decent sleep, the money spent will be well worth it.

i'm wanting to go the whole-hog and get those contour memory foam pillows too. my current memory foam pillow is of no use at all to be honest, but it isn't shaped - it's just the shape of a 'normal' pillow, and it offers no support at all, and every night/morning is so uncomfortable i'm often downstairs at silly-o'clock, in the middle of the night, to sit on the sofa, as i just end up frustrated and crying when in bed - so very uncomfortable.

i just wanted to post on here to say how helpful i've found reading everyone's opinions on the memory-foam mattresses/toppers/pillows, and that i'm so excited, waiting for the loan to come through so that i can buy the mattress and pillows. i've been searching on ebay, and have found one at £138.97 with free delivery, for a double bed, and a pair of contour pillows at about £30 if i remember rightly, so i really can't wait now that i've seen how many people have found the mattresses and/or pillows helpful. at the end of the day, my 'sleep' can't get any worse! thanks again everyone xxx

hiya,
i got my 3" double bed sized memory foam topper about 2 months ago from amazon and it only cost about £60..... i was shocked as all the other sites listed it at double that price.

it's even covered in it's own removable cover to keep it clean etc and is soooo comfy! my last one was only 1" and i thought that was quite good. well, until i slept on this one!

I have an ajustable bed but can never find any to fit it as its 3ft by 6ft 6". Sheets dont fit. I have a very cheap topper which doesnt help but would love to get a new one when I can afford it. Any suggestion where to get one that will fit my bed as most are 10cm too short. The one that I have has a big section missing as the pest chewed it when he was a puppy he hated the smell of it.

hiya DeeNJai

i've not seen any that size, maybe you can get a slightly bigger one without a cover and cut it? my last bed was a 3/4 width one (a little bit bigger than a single) and i got a cheap one and cut it to size, the foam is quite easy to cut with sharp scissors or a sharp knife. :) . you'll just need to make sure you dont get one that covered in fabric or you'll have to do some sewing!

I've currently got a cheap memory foam pillow, it was ok to start with but now im finding it really uncomfy. I've read some of the post and I can see that there is mixed reviews about memory foam pillows, I thought that maybe a dearer memory foam pillow might be better, but I don't want to spend loads of money for something that ends up being no good.

I have a memory foam pillow which is fantastic. But it does hurt my neck after a while; i have touse a normal pillow then change to the memory pillow after a couple weeks then change to using no pillow after a couple weeks. Does any one know why this would be?

I've got Dunlopillow foam pillows, initially for allergies as they are dustmite-proof, but they are really comfy pillows. They are rather expensive, but I've just bought one every now and again, and they do last for years and years.

Additionally, I use a rolled-up fleece blanket around my shoulders, to support my neck, and I have a small beanbag pillow, which neatly conforms to the crook of my neck. In my experience, what you often need is not a single, magic pillow, but a variety of smaller pillows and supports, that you can arrange as needed. I find cheap, fleece blankets particularly useful as impromptu pillows. In the summer, I often sleep on top of the duvet and cover my body with a fleece blanket.

I do also have a 2 inch memory foam topper which was £60 for a double and worth every penny.

Although I cant afford a memory foam mattress I do have a pillow made of it-just a cheap one from Dunelm Mill which was about £20 and is contoured to fit the shape of your neck............and I wouldn't be without it for the world!!! It lessens the amount of neck related headaches I get, and if I go away I always take it with me! One day, with any luck, maybe I will be able to afford a mattress too!!

There is a company called ergoflex who do tempur style memory foam mattresses but about half the price (quarter of the price at the moment as they have a sale on)

They also have a competition on facebook to win a mattress if you click 'like' on their page.

Please do sit and lie on a memory foam mattress before you buy one. Loads of people here love them but I found them horrible! When I first sat on it (in retrospect a bit suddenly) it was rock hard and jarred my back. Just as I stiffened up with the surprise it went squishy underneath me and I sank  Just lying on it I got a hideous sinking feeling as it moulded around me, made me feel quite claustrophobic. This was a solid slab of Tempur, but even with the topped mattresses it felt really hot and uncomfortable.

Some people swear by them but I still cant quite work it out! John Lewis often have the really expensive full-thickness mattresses and don't hassle you too much while you test-drive different types of mattress so they're good for finding out what you like.

I recently bought a topper from a med supplies store , it is not memory foam, but is foam that looks like the inside of lots of eggboxes I was worried that the foam would make me too hot so put it under my cotton topper and it has been great only used it for a week so far but seems to really take the pressure off my hips when on my side and heals when on my back. not waking in the night with pain atm so fingers crossed :) I tried memory foam but itwas just not right for me but I know other people with back pain who swear by them.
need to work out how to trim it down because it is only on my side of the bed and it is 3ft wide, no room for husband

Does anyone know how often you should replace a memory foam mattress??

I have a full memory foam mattress which cost me a lot of money about 6 years ago. I haven't found it as supportive lately and am getting pain in my hips and shoulders again. I'm wondering if this is because I need a new one (or maybe a topper for it as I couldn't afford a new one now) or simply because my condition has worsened.

I believe I was told that I should expect to get ten good years out of it if rotated regularly. Mine is almost four years old, I think and still pretty good. I must change the sheets and give it an airing though. It feels so much nicer when it is all freshly made. I think there are people who will come and clean them too, depending where you are.
