Magic: The Gathering (Card Game)

Postby iNeko » Mon Sep 13, 2010 8:51 pm

Hi Everyone, I wondered if anyone here played MtG, as I've just started! A few friends picked it up and I decided to join in, costs a fortune to keep up with (must buy more  ) but the actual game itself is great fun! It'd be nice to see more players of it, then I can ask for strategies for beating a friend of mine who has a Leyline of Vitality coupled with a Protean Hydra, which I think is a little over the top...

Sorry for all the nerd speak up there, but I thought I'd ask, to see if anyone else played so we could have a big discussion! Also, apologies for the joke earlier, I'm not sure meek comments come across well in text! They seem fine in my head but reading them back it's a bit

The actual game is a little bit like poker (strangely enough), because you can bluff with what's in your hand to put your opponent off his attack, but of course you have monsters and magic spells to back it all up! At first I thought it was incredibly sad (ok, it still is a bit sad!) but it's really fun and you can sink hours into figuring out which cards go well together as well as the actual battles which can last from a few minutes to a couple of hours. Plus it's really easy to learn!

I'd love to get more people interested in it, because it seems to be relatively unknown over in the UK (it's recently become quite big, again, over in America) so I thought I'd start here  plus who doesn't like elves and dragons and vampires and things like that?

I played the old PC version, it was very nice done, but the AI was very stupid and playing too easy. I heard about the new PC release, but couldn't launch the demo version :wink2:

I saw that there was a new PC Game (I think it's also out on Xbox Live?) I don't know how well it could replicate some of the sheer chaos you can get up to in the card game though, though it would be fun to try!

I don't expect many people to play the card game, but it would be nice to see if there's one or two :)

I used to many years ago, but not since then. I used to play Mtg and also WoW TCG. Don't really have the money to spend on it anymore.

The offline version must be very interesting and the paper cards drawings are cool, but you need time to get plenty of blisters to find rare cards, make a nice deck and then regularly go somewhere to play risking loosing precious cards. You must be very driven to do all this :)
Lazy people like me loose the chaos fan (the PC calculates mana and damage by the way) :)
In the old PC game red decks had many enchantments and instant effects to destroy all kinds of opponents.

Sheppey - I didn't know there was a Warcraft one (I used to play WoW a long time ago, I didn't like the whole "raid! omg raid!" scene...) I'm new to this whole card game thing, so everything is a bit bewildering (and yes, some of the cost is incredible, I've put about £100 into buying some of the newer sets in the form of "Fat Packs" )

Hjalmberi - I have quite a lot of 'rare' cards (they have a gold thingy on them) as well as a few 'mythic' ones (which have an orange thingy on them), one guy I know is very jealous that I have more of these 'super rare' ones than he does and I've only just started  it's all good fun though :) I have counters for my health and mana, they're like 20 sided dice, but a bit different, if that makes sense!

Rearranging my main deck, which is a mana/life building white/artifact deck. It's a bit over the top as far as decks go, but I haven't had chance to test it out yet! I'll list the cards that are in it at the moment:

24 Land Cards:
20x Plains
1x Stalking Stones
1x Eldrazi Temple
1x Mystifying Maze
1x Darksteel Citadel

8 'White' Cards:
1x Holy Strength
1x Goldenglow Moth
2x Serra Angel
1x Lone Missionary
1x Ajani's Mantra
1x Angel of Salvation
1x Elspeth, Knight-Errant (Plainswalker)

1 Colourless Card:
1x All is Dust

27 Artifact Cards:
2x Puppet Strings
2x Triskelion
2x Steel Overseer
2x Stone Golem
1x Clockwork Hydra
1x Serrated Biskelion
1x Arcbound Worker
1x Voltaic Key
1x Razormane Masticore
1x Ornithopter
1x Synod Centurion
1x Phyrexian Hulk
1x Brittle Effigy
1x Lightning Greaves
1x Kracken's Eye
1x Wurm's Tooth
1x Angel's Feather
1x Pentavus
1x Elixir of Immortality
1x Dragon's Claw
1x Everflowing Chalice
1x Energy Chamber
1x Whispersilk Cloak

I want to try and cut down the amount of artifacts I have in there  and put a few more white cards in. I think I can shuffle out the cards such as Kracken's Eye and Whispersilk Cloak and put in some more devastating ones such as Darksteel Reactor! I'm not too sure what to do, because I quite like this deck as is, but it relies too much on artifacts (even though it is an artifact deck!)

I forgot to update this! My deck is now wildly different, as from tomorrow it includes this crazy thing! (It's a total power grab, yes, but it's so awesome.) I also have a couple of these and four of these. The main reason for lots of enchantment killing instants and sorceries is because my friends rely heavily on enchantments to beef up creatures  so I strip them of their power and throw a 6/6 at them, they'll have nowhere to run!

Tomorrow with the "creature that shall not be named" I should be getting a huge stack of cards to beef up my collection as well as my other decks! :) Most of the cards I have coming are from the newest sets so they should compliment each other nicely!
