How long does it take to heal from a knee dislocation?

My left knee has dislocated several times in the past. 4 years ago, I had a lateral release surgery done and for the first time since then, my knee dislocated again 2 weeks ago. In the past, when it dislocated I ws able to walk on it fine within a week. But now, I have been off of it for 2 weeks and this is the first time it has dislocated since my surgery 4 years ago! I am trying to walk on it.. but still limping very badly. everytime I do walk on it, I hear a loud pop with each step I take. It's still swollen too but not as badly as a week ago. I am just confused I guess because like I said.. in the past, before surgery, i was walking on it that same week. Could surgery have made something worse with this dislocation??

Not all dislocations are the same. "Dislocated" just means it moved out of its proper place. It's possible that the first time it slipped out and back in without damaging anything much, whilst this time it did do some damage.

Whilst it's important to try to keep using your limbs and so on, if walking is distinctly painful and increases other symptoms (like the swelling) then it's best to stop doing it. Pain from an injury is telling your body that something is wrong. It probably needs more rest to heal properly, so the ligaments can hold the knee in place, and any damage can be repaired.

The healing time depends on what damage is done, and it will be longer for someone with HMS.

hi ive had that same op done to me 16 years ago and following surgey just after because it didnt work and still didnt after 3 others. becarful about the surgey ive found so many surgens that promise the its the cure and its not, think hard and long. maybe a petella knee suport rather than anything else.
ive found knees and ancles dont always go back to how they were befor they dislocate, they seem loose and unstable hence why i say use a suport. it can take months/years for some injurys to get back to normal (as such ) but theres the risk of doing it again inbetween.

By 'Normal' people six weeks.
But i need most 8 to 12 weeks!

But the last time, it was really a problem, because i'm not Cured.
And it happened on 12 January!
So i'm trying hard to heeling, but if i ever can walk again that's the big Question!

doesn’t sound good, your knee-thing. Do you know what hinders your knee to recover?

I’ve dislocated mine end of March, six weeks with a brace, four weeks to get it mobile again, still feels strange but can walk and swim now. It’s always like that (except once: kneecap was broken, surgery, two weeks in hospital, then crutches and at least four month until knee was normal).

Now I have my doubts, if the immobilisation really is useful. Here they always tell you its necessary if you go to a&e, what I only do if the kneecap was out for more than some seconds and is swollen, so that I’m worried something’s really wrong. The lack of movement/bad posture with the knee brace seems to make every other thing like shoulders, spine even fingers a lot worse.

i don't know why it doesn't recover. I still can't walk. And it happends again with my left knee!
Everytime beffore one knee can recover it happends again..
And i wear all THE dat round kneebraces. Sometimes they subluxate in THE braces.
And i am happy if I can set à step without THE braces and my knees stay normal.
In THE shower i have my braces off. So i have to be very careful than before you know i fel down om the ground!
Because i can't walk al my muscles in my lege are getting very weak. So if i can walk when my knees do normal i can't walk trough that horible weak muscles!

They won't operate me, because 4 years ago i had à dislocation of my knee and then there was à pièce of Cartilage broken!
They have removed it and then it went worser and worser whit that knee!
Also if had Somers stiches then and now scarves and they doing so much pain if you touch it i scream it uur of THE pain

Oh, Pootje, hugs! Can’t advise anything. It seems that muscles get weaker and weaker so fast; get them stronger takes so much time, if possible at all. It’s always worth to try at least, if you are able to. How do you feel? Just because I’m now nearly unable to do anything, even eating (and I loved to eat loads of chocolate). Doctor calls it depression, another thing I would prefer not to have. Sorry, I’m not helpful.
