Motability Car

Postby pink » Wed Jul 14, 2010 10:26 am

Hi,

Just wondered if someone can help answer my query. The car I want requires a downpayment but also has a waiting list of a few month (can use my current car until it comes). My question is, do I pay the downpayment on order of the car or when I collect this?

Thanks

I'm not entirely sure as our car didn't require downpayment. I would contact the dealership to find out

Pink i am 95% sure that any down payment has to be paid when you collect the car .
I know Motability and the car sales rep will give you the right answer , but 3 yrs ago this is what i had to do

Not sure if this includes any adaptions which you may or may not need !!

Waiting to get accepted onto the scheme now then the order can get placed for the car (and I do pay the advance payment on delivery). Does ayone know of any reason why someone wouldn't get accepted onto the motability scheme?

Hi all

I think it is just a matter of checking that you receive the correct rate of benefit (e.g. DLA high rate mobility component), and have ast least 12 months left of your benefit award. The only time I have known someone be refused was because they had less than 12 months left.

Pink
I get my new car Mid November , this will be my second car on Motability
I don't know if you have been told this , BUT before pick up ,( if it has not changed !! ) you may need to go to your nearest Job Centre to get you DLA payments switched from being paid to you directly , to Motability (they will get your next payment ).
All you need to do is sign a couple of bits of paper :)
It may pay to call the garage up to see if this needs to be done ( like i said things may have changed ) and as far as i know you do not have to pay anything back to DWP

I haven't been told to do anything like that, just input a code into the car that motability gave me. Has anyone else with a recent motability car had to do this at the job centre? I work full time atm so would be hard to get there

I didn't have to do anything like that. It was all sorted for me. I got a payment just before I got the car and then all subsequent payments were with the motability bit taken out.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this, but its the closest I could find after doing a search!

Has anyone else had the email from Benefits and Work regarding the changes that have happened to the motability scheme? Firstly you are no longer allowed to pay more than £2000 as an advance payment so that you can get a bigger car, and also you are no longer to have someone who live more than 5 miles from the hirer to be a named driver on it.

Well this would mess me up completely! I had been looking at the cars as if I do get HRM DLA I would like to get a car that I can actually fit my family and wheelchair in. Now I cannot get ANY car that would do this as they were all over £2000 advance payment! I have 5 kids so would need a 7 seater with a large boot space to fit my chair and a few bits of shopping etc or packing when we go away for a few nights (I have to have a rigid chair due to pelvis probs). Once again it seems that it is thanks to the utter rubbish that the tabloids print that this has happened as the email states that it was caused by articles in the Daily Fail about people getting top end BMW's!

Also it's a good job that I have moved into town near my sisters as I would put one of them down as a driver as I cannot drive anymore and cannot always rely on Hubby being available to take me to hospital appointments etc. Before we moved they were 10 miles from us and so this would not have been allowed! Seems that once again they have failed to allow for those who do not live in cities, or those who would just like to have a choice about where they live!
Finally diagnosed March 2011 after 20 years of hypochondria!!!

If you are awarded the higher rate for mobility you could look into having the car over 5 years instead of the normal 3 years as might get rid of the advance payment. They don't say a lot about the 5 year contracts. I would have had my new power chair on a 5 year contract but decided to go for a 3 year contract as I didn't want a chair for 5 years as my needs might change as my last chair was fine at first but now its not suitable for me.

Hi
Just checked on The Motability website here is what they say:
20 October 2011

A number of changes to the Scheme have been announced in a statement from Motability’s Chairman, Lord Sterling. Key changes include:

A streamlined selection of cars available, up to a maximum Advance Payment of £2,000 (this limit does not apply to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles)
Nominated drivers under 21 will only be permitted where they live with the disabled customer
All nominated drivers need to live within five miles of the customer’s home

The changes are designed to ensure that Motability provides clear policies, focused on the needs of the vast majority of customers. They will also help avoid misuse and misrepresentation of the Scheme.

The changes to car selection take place immediately, although Motability will honour all existing orders and commitments. Other changes will take effect from 1 January 2012.

There is no change for existing contracts, or nominated drivers named on current insurance certificates, for the remainder of existing leases.

I hope this helps people.
