AtW don't make chairs, they just put you in touch with a company who does. Have a look in here and then give them a ring on 01502 585571 and see if they'll measure the extra-small seat for you.

Hi Spireite,

I have been reading your posts and can see how desperate you are to get a decent fitting chair. I got my motorised office chair specially made via the Access to Work scheme from a company called Advanced Seating Design. They do conventional chairs as well and custom make the chairs to the individuals proportions using the "Pose" system:

I hope the link I have provided may be of use to you. My special chair cost over £7,000, of which AtW paid 20%. I know AtW may not be the right thing for you at the moment, but perhaps you can get some joy by speaking to the people at Advanced Seating Design.

Hi Spireite,

The link that Sue New gives, looks exactly like the chair I have, and it fits very snuggly! I want one for home cos I am sure I could sleep in it better than I do in bed!
Just remember if you have a smaller chair, then the desk should not be at the normal height so you will strain upper limbs so probably best to discuss that too.

I hope this is the right place to post this as it relates to voluntary work not paid work, but I have a query about conflicts between making 'reasonable adjustments' and health and safety requirements.

I'd like to do some voluntary work in a local bookshop and had a chat with the shop manager this afternoon. The main problem seems to be that the role would involve A LOT of standing around behind the counter. I asked about having a stool, but apparently they used to have one until the fire officer told them to remove it because of safety issues (there isn't a lot of space).

I'm going to go in on Thursday to have another chat with the manager and see if there's any way around this but was wondering if anyone had come across similar conflicts before?

If the space is so small that a fire office thinks a stool is unsafe, then how about using one of those walking sticks that have a seat on? These are small and foldable and therefore should present no significant additional hazard in terms of fire safety - nor health and safety, but will address your personal requirements - and it is cheap! (This is my opinion as someone qualified to carry out health and safety inspections and who has worked closely with the fire service many times, although I only have the info you have given to go on :) )

ali - call them, there are very few employers who'll fail to deal with AtW.

Diagnosed HEDS December 1st 2005. DD1 (20) HEDS and scoliosis (now corrected by surgery), diagnosed June 2006. DD2 (18) mild HMS. Son (11) some hypermobile joints, poor muscle strength and seems to be developing scoliosis as well, woopee!
