I just finished my first knitted sock!I'm all proud as it sounded really difficult to do and despite getting stuck a few times I just finished it off - I learnt so much! I need to get my husband to try it on as it's meant for my Dad (although I originally meant it for me, not sure what my Dad will think of blue, brown and beige stripey socks!!). It fits me perfectly which is why I'm worried that it might not fit my Dad. Oh well, if it doesn't then I get them! Mind you, I still have to knit the second sock, LOL.
Fiona-Jane, a blanket was exactly how I started last year. Still haven't finished it, but I've finished lots of things in the meantime and I still pick it up every so often and knit a few more rows (there's 200 stitiches per row so it's not that fast to knit!). I think it's the perfect project as it lasts for a long time but you can do it in small pieces. Having said that, I started crocheting one that consists of two different sizes of octagons in really bright and contrasting colours and then realised that I had to crochet 81 big octagons and 100 small ones and it was taking me a day to finish each octagon - I've put it away and will hopefully get back to it someday but I'm still not up to it yet! One advantage was that it was great to carry around as I'd just grab enough wool to do one of the colours in a bunch of octagons - it wasn't like my one piece blanket that can only get worked on at home in the winter (I've finished over half of it and it lies on my legs and warms me up!
