Problems getting on

Postby sheppeyescapee » Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:25 am

For some reason I can get on the forum on my PC, but not on my laptop or blackberry. All are connected to the same network and are loading other sites fine, no idea what is going wrong there  Any ideas?

I've had real problems getting on all weekend and it's only just came back up so maybe it's a weird internet thing!

The website did disappear for a while, but it's back now and all should be fine. You may find you have the odd problem for a day or so while.

That was probably being served to you by the old server, some of the DNS records were messed up. It's only just started working on my phone again as the new details trickle through...so now I can feed my addiction on the move :D

I've switched over to Google DNS now, seems reasonably secure...

Google have a DNS? I'm using OpenDNS at the moment on my home network (have done for years) but my Nexus One is just using default settings and seems to fly! It's much, much faster than anything else on the network at internet surfing!

Yep, they have two DNS servers, both have easy to remember addresses (sneaky!): 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 . There's a set of pages about it here. It's great if you have one of those rubbish ISPs that redirects bad requests for you, it causes all sorts of problems :wall:

Before I moved to Be* I was with tiscali, the DNS lookup (the caching in particular) was so bad some websites would only update 2/3 times a day  I only found out when I had my own website (A level assignment) and the host redirect would never work at home!

I have to stick with T-mobile's HSDPA proxies and DNS for my Nexus One (shame) but it's fast as heck anyway so that's not a problem! I wonder what's next for Google, they already have my credit card (Google Checkout), photos (Picasa), blog (Blogger), videos (youtube), contacts/calendar/emails (Gmail), I'm already using a phone with their logo on the back and now they want my browsing history...! it's... kinda scary when you think about it...

Blimey, that's what that Google maps update was earlier! It looks like a location based version of twitter almost... tinfoil hats indeed

Joking aside, I quite like Google :)
