hello there!
I've never read anything anywhere about a connection between HMS/EDS and stopping growing, but I have a suspicion that there might be in a v small minority of us bendies.

my bro stopped growing at around 11 and is about 4'6" - at the time, back in the beginning of the 1960s they suspected it might have been an adverse reaction to small pox vaccination... but some 15yrs ago he took part in a big study of 'people of short stature' and he was in the v small percentage of peops where they had no idea why this had happened.
and the only other two peops, I knew of until now, who also are on the v short side and had also stopped growing around 11 without any explanation, were 2 peops on here...

Hi all

I stopped growing in height at 13/14, not that long after puberty. Istopped at 5ft 2 1/2 inches. Both my daughters seem to stop growing at about the same age, I think it can be inherited, except DD2 grew 1 1/2 inches in 6 hours when she had her scoliosis corrected :D

Rosie
Diagnosed HEDS December 1st 2005. DD1 (20) HEDS and scoliosis (now corrected by surgery), diagnosed June 2006. DD2 (18) mild HMS. Son (11) some hypermobile joints, poor muscle strength and seems to be developing scoliosis as well, woopee!

I stopped growing at about 13/14 too - I thought that was normal for girls. My brother didn't stop growing until about 16-18. I'm 5'7" and was the smallest in my class at age 10, was equal to the tallest person by age 11, and was head and shoulders taller than the previously tallest person by age 13.

hiya,

i stopped growing early too, but more than likely due to precocious puberty (i started puberty at 6 so i would have naturally stopped growing at around 11 years old). i was born small too, apparently due to intrauterine growth retardation, and i missed the last growth spurt that you're supposed to get just after puberty (the one that makes your arms and legs long) so i have a child's proportions which comes in very handy when i go clothes shopping! :wink2:

i'm pretty sure my height is not HMS/EDS related, most doctors are very shocked when they look at me and hear that i have EDS as most are tall! my height is one of the reasons i was mis-diagnosed for so many years.

i like my teenyness! i'm 4'7" (although on a good day i can be up to 4'9" thanks to my huuuge intervertebral discs ) , have size 2 feet and wear age 9-10 clothing! my favourite red cardigan is supposed to be worn by a primary school child and it has a space on the label to write the class number! hehehehe!

i look really young too and frequently get mistaken for someone much younger than my 29 years (most people usually think i'm between 14-16years old). although small children have the uncanny ability to guess my age correctly! but that IS due to my EDS - my skin is so soft and supple it hides my age :wink2:

Me too. I don't think I got any taller after age 13 but it may have been 14. A couple of years ago (age 45) I had a spinal X ray and discovered that I am missing two lumbar discs!! That is why I never got those couple inches taller that I should have based on the other females in my family. I felt cheated.

Actually being shorter is not the worst thing that could happen but my way of dealing with it was to hop up on a counter in the kitchen or drag a kitchen chair over to get to high places. Our chairs are very sturdy, which is good.

Fi, Wikipedia says that you are officially a little person.
It is sometimes defined as a person with an adult height under 4 feet 10 inches (147 cm).
I did not know that. :)

I always felt like I should have been taller. My big sisters are 5'10" and 5'7" and Mom was (she has gotten shorter due to her spinal problems) 5'7. My little sister is like me at 5'4". I really wonder after finding out that I am missing two lumbar discs if she is missing any also. She has not had a spinal X ray though.

The clothes they make for kids now are essentially the same as they make for teens and young adults. That must make it a little easier when shopping. And they often cost less too!

So it's deffo not related to HMS? well thats a good thing to hear then! and it does make it easier shopping for clothes.

everyone in my family is about 5'8-6'6 so im the smallest in my family. even my 12 year old brother is 5'11 now! but he has marfans and apparently that affects growth as well. im so out of the know its unreal

I'm actually one of the taller people in my family, most of them are around 5ft or just under  . Funny thing is I still have a longer reach than people 4-5 inches taller than me

I'm 5ft 4 and also stopped growing at around 13/14 much to my dismay. In primary school I towered above everyone else, but then when we were 12/13 they all had massive growth spurts whereas I didn't. My mum is short though and my dad is only 5ft 10, my brother however is 6ft 4!

Have to say I'm a towering 5'8 and a bit more depending on when I'm measures almost 5'9.
I did have size 9 feet then shrank down to a size 7
I stopped growing somewhere between 18 - 21.
I hit 20 and think I stopped growing up wards and went sideways. from a lovely size 12 to a size 16/18 by the time I was 25
I feel like a bowl of Rice Cripsies!! I'm snap, crackling, popping everywhere!

Hi all

from a lovely size 12 to a size 16/18 by the time I was 25

That should, of course, read 'from a size 12 to a lovely size 16/18 by the time I was 25'
