Any hints and tips?

Postby tamsin78 » Thu May 29, 2008 11:55 am

Hi there,
I am pregnant with my first child (20 weeks). So far my hypermobility has not been too bad but am starting to experience problems with my lower back and hips. Don't know if it is just a 'normal' pregnancy thing or related to HMS

Anyone got any tips for pregnancy? Currently blocking out the whole labour thing!!!!!!!!!

Thanks
tamsin78

congratulations on your pregnancy- can't offer you any tips though as i have never had any kids myself, i just enjoy looking efter everyone elses and handing them back at the end ;)
Good luck with your pregnancy :)
What about seeing a physio to keep your muscles as strong as possible? you could use the cones to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles? the physio might also be able to advise you about your lower back probs?
Sorry i dont have any great advice, but i did just want to reply and say congratulations. *(sorry about my spelling btw!)

Just noticed you are a newbie- welcome to the boards tasmin :bye:
Post as musch or as little as you like on here, have a good nosey around the different sections and use the 'search' tool at the top right hand corner if you want to find anything in perticular.
Everyone on here is very friendly, these boards are my lifelines and i would be lost without all my friends that i have made on here- i dont know what i would do without it- it totally rocks!! :D
I would definately reccomend joining the HMSA, you then get a newsletter and can then come on the weekends away (yay!), - a chance to to meet evberyone that you have been chatting to and put names to faces, or is it putting faces to names?! hehe Anyway at the weekends away it is not just a social thing (alough it is a great time to network with eachother!), there are talks/sessions from doctor's, physio's, ot's etc etc...
Anyway, i just wanted to post again to say 'welcome to the hmsa boards' - i hope all my babbiling made some sort of sense to you!! hehehe!

Hiya, if you have a look around there are links that might help you. Try here for one thread but you may need to PM a mod for access. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with pregnancy so I can only hope that others can offer some ideas.

 just done what jo-jo did...and I've done the same. Welcome to the boards. There is an area to introduce yourself here which might help.
Off to wake myself up now

Physio and a support belt work wonders.

I have just been browsing amazon for support belts funnily enough.

Get thee to an ante-natal physiotherapist pronto missy. Support belts are only any good though if you have a big bump. I didn't have anything remotely resembling a bump until i was a week off delivering (it was put down to the fact im tall and thin with a long torso/abdomen so she was easier to hide) so i found the 3 strap belt didnt help. Others wax lyrical about them.

One thing i will say is DO YOUR PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES!
Women with HMS are more likely to suffer prolapses after childbirth so it is so so important to keep on top of them (although having said this i have recently been diagnosed 3 years after birth with a bladder prolapse even though i have done them religiously).

Post-Natal physio is a great help too. I now have a pelvic support belt thing - like the ante-natal ones only just one strap - as my pelvis is incredibly unstable. Again it was core muscle strengthening exercises and i found them fairly similar to the ante-natal stuff. It also helps you get back in shape post-natally too ;)

i had to use a support belt but it only helped for a little while towards the end of the pregnancy i couldnt do nothing and was restricted to bed rest and only allowed up to pee as my muscles tore in my belly and underneath me  it was agony but it gave me time to make the worlds best birthplan ever and i lost count of the amount of times i repacked my hospital bag and managed to read every terry pratchett book he had written uptill then :D
good luck
