Avascular Necrosis of the hip requiring core decompression

Postby Scobie » Wed May 14, 2008 3:19 pm

Hi,

I have just come back from seeing the orthopaedic surgeon, having been told i have avascular necrosis of the hip and will be having a core decompression of my hip.

Has anybody on the forum been diagnosed with this or had a core decompression. I would really appreciate some advice if anybody has any. I was off work last year for 8 months with my HMS and am in the process of building a new team at work. this is really bad timing work wise but struggling to cope with the pain.

If anybody has had this surgery can you give me any idea how long you were off work following the surgery, i need to be off for as short a time as possible. I would really appreciate advice on this

Thank you
Scobie

Hi Scobie,

Have just done a quick search and found this:

http://www.aboutjoints.com/patientinfo/topics/core/core.htm

Not sure if it helps or not but good luck

Thank you Nat,

All the information i have read says approx 6 weeks but the consultant said about 2, feeling really confused

thank you for the help and the link. I think i am just being really cowardly the thought of being on the recieving end ( I used to be a nurse)

The information says 6 weeks for the crutches. Maybe your consultant thinks you will be able to work after 2 weeks - but just have the first 4 weeks at work on crutches - is this practical at your work?

I am lucky i can work from home if required or get a lift into work so can work on crutches.

I wont be able to drive for 6 weeks - so will need to get a lift to work

coming round to the idea now - I am such a coward!

Hi Scobie aww you used to be a nurse cool, my mum is an ex nurse too she had to come off work sick when she had me. She has Rheumatoid Arthritis. Consultants not sure why they say 2 weeks perhaps some do come of crutches in 2 weeks me thinks thats a bit soon but of course having hms it takes longer for us and the healing issue to. I really hope if you do have the op that it helps you and remember when you have it done don't rush things take your time.

Take care

Hi Scobie sorry only just got your message haven't been on the boards for a few weeks. No worries anytime. I know I am inppatient too but I have learn you cannot rush things. My back has been a problem for 10 months now I have learnt to be patient now as I know I cannot do anything about it. Pacing I know easy to say isn't it but in practice not so easy.

You take care
