8 legged hairy things as pets!

Postby Esky » Mon May 19, 2008 9:53 am

As I mentioned in the "Today thread" We have a new Pet Gloria the Chilean Red Tarantula. :D

She is a very pretty coppery Pink colour and we have managed to see her feed twice alredy which means she is happy in her new tank.

My oldest son who like his mother is very much a Goth (hes only 12!) had wanted one for ages so we went to the special pet shop with a friend who is very into snakes and reptiles as he had a baby Milk snake on order. We only went to look and check prices but my partner and my son both fell in love with her. (She is very pretty!) so we came away with a full Vivarium heat mat and the Arachnid!

Over the next couple of days once she has settled in my partner is going to try to handle her for the first time. She has venom but nothing worse than a Bee sting apparently! (he can definitly go first with the holding thing!).

As i just mention a friend of ours has several snakes 7 to be exact and he was having trouble with one of them his new King snake is a grumpy thing and would not let anyone handle it! So my big brave (or some might say stupid) OH said he would get it out of the tank for him! Oh he did just not in the way he was expecting! It bit and attached itself to his thumb and was just hanging there! All my OH could say was "Its not hurting!"....I like spiders they have legs at least you can tell where they are heading and walking!

I have split this discussion into it's own thread for the sake of us sensitive souls that are phobic of the things

She sounds lovely  As a child I always wanted a tarantula, but my mother was incredibly phobic. Even though I have moved out of home, and live 203 miles away, she has vowed to never come and visit if there is one in the house, so I have so far managed to resist!
I hope she brings you many years of happiness :)

I love tarantulas.
I have a friend with two...
I don't think I could have them myself though... I'd have ideas of them finding their way into my bed or something

Snakes on the other hand, are fantastic and I want... one to start off with, I suppose :)

And it can't sustain like one half could,
It's wanting more that's going to send me to my knees.

From what my friend has experienced he has 5 Corn snakes and never had a problem with any of them they come in loads of different colours and are very placid.

Avoid King snakes shes not nice lol!!!

My brother has several taratulas (and african snails and stick insects) when we were younger. We all found them absolutely fascinating, and I have to admit that the fact that lots of people were freaked out by them only enhanced our love for them

Wow Esky, she's lovely - a good size too!!Well done to your OH for getting her out of the tank, that's the worst bit. You might want to try just letting her walk across your hand or arm, it's such a great feeling when you've been arachnophobic but can bring yourself to do it!!

She is still only a baby about 12 months old. She will grow to a size that should just cover a CD. (legs on each edge of the cd that is not body!)

If we can get our digital camera working i will see if we can get a better photo rather than the ones from our phones.
