Permanent Disability Cover

Can anyone help me with this one?

Im still working part time right now, and hopefully will manage to do so for as long as I can. My employers have been fab and are currently giving me lots of support so far...

However, me and hubby had 'the talk' about what would happen in the future if I couldnt work anymore. We checked a critical illness policy we have and it covers me for permanent disability.

Theres an exclusion on the policy for me, which says it wont cover me for anything 'either directly or indirectly linked to the sacroiliac joints or the supprting ligament/muscles' This exclusion was put on when we took ut the policy as I'd had lower back pain on and off for years, and as I do a sit down job, they decided to exclude this.

My question is, if i give up work it will be due to the pain caused in ALL my joints, but especially my hands and shoulders. Yes, i do get pain in my back, but I also have FMS, so the muscle pain is a contributory factor also. Do you think they could try and get out of paying and say that all joints are linked to the spine, therefore the exclusion applies?

Am I right in thinking that FMS is not classed as a permanent illness, as it hasnt been proved that it is a lifelong illness and can wax and wane in its symptoms? I dont think I could claim under the FMS, but under the HS diagnosis.

I have no intention of claiming unless things get that bad. Also. work would have to medically retire me or get rid on capability grounds, so surely that would help? If my employer says Im unfit in the future, surely theyd have to take that into consideration?

Its all such a horrible minefield, but i want to be prepared for the battle in the future if I have to.....if my brain fog will allow!!

Hi Yorkie,

The insurance company will try everything they can to avoid paying out! I had critical illness cover on all of my loan's, cards etc and only 1 has paid out. My first diagnosis was CFS and at least one used that as a get out clause :( Your best bet would be to ask the company to clarify what is and isn't covered, I don't see how they can exclude a particular bodypart without having a diagnosis :S

Hi Yorkie as Lindsey has said insurance companies will do anything to get out of paying. It is possible that they could get out of paying and saying that things are contributing to the fact of your back. Not sure what to suggest really, maybe something to explore or put on hold and see what happens.
