EDS 3 and Tattooing

Postby shellbell » Thu Jul 19, 2007 1:05 am

i'm eager to get some tattoos done. has anyone been told they cannot have them done, or had any adverse effects due to having them done because of hms/eds? i just need some advice really, my mum wanted me to check before i do anything hasty (an incident with a piercing a few years ago has left all my family slightly twitchy!) because i don't want to risk anything disastrous happening.

(sorry for the ramblyness, have taken some tramadol, it does seem to have that effect! thanks in advance!)

i have 6 or 7 and have always been ok. although remembering we are all different and our conditions effect us differently i would maybe check with a doctor first.

I have five at the moment, and a few more in the pipeline. The only problem I've found is that it takes a long time to heal (nothing new there  ) and sometimes the scar tissue raises up for no apparent reason, so I can actually "feel" my tattoos like they're in braille :? . My tattooist has never come across this before and thinks it's just because all my scar tissue is odd (my tattoos are all between four years and eighteen months old, so not particularly recent).

As with anything else, be careful, go to a reputable tattooist and make sure that you take good care while it is healing. I wash mine three - four times a day in warm, soapy water, pat dry with a soft towel and slather Bepanthen cream on them. So far, I've never had a single issue.

Heheh, the ramble-tramadol effect, I get that too. It's good for the shy people :D.

I have three tattoos and have never had a problem (but no prob with 7 piercings either, though my top earrings/holes did take over a year to heal right). One is over my TB jab scar and nothing has ever happened and it doesn't look different to the rest.

Planning another, I just need the courage as it'll be going over my collorbone (shoulderblade to bra edge). And it'll be covering my second tattoo which SOMEONE won't be happy about.
If it isn't screamingly painful I'll get the same over the other shoulder.

Hiya

I have 3 tattoos, one on my ankle and one on each arm. The only one that gave me a bit of gyp was the one on my ankle, swelled a bit a scabbed quite thickly, had it done right on my bone though so maybe not such a good idea :?

Sez - thank god for you :) One of my arm tattoos does exactly the same as yours, raises up like braille, I can trace the outline without looking. It sometimes itchs when it does that ?? I've had it for about 6 years so I don't know why it does it. I asked prof Bird but he just said maybe it was a localised allergy  I'm just glad it's not just me that gets the raised outline, was beginning to get paranoid

Have tattooos here, too. No problems - but I have had problems with piercings.
I've got two massive rearing horses, one on each shoulder blade, a name across the back of my neck, and a quote underneath that. And a name on the inside of my wrist.

Hi Shellbell

I have a tattoo on my arm/shoulder and I get the funny raised thing sometimes and it sometimes gets itchy too!

The only problem I have with it is that the part that just comes over my shoulder is a wee bit blurred it seems that my skin there is very thin and streatchy but hey ho i've had it 10 years and i'm not too bothered.
So I can reccommend that you choose your position and design carefully because once it's done your stuck with it.

Let us know what you decide to get

I've never had a problem with my tattoo either. Sounds like you're probably ok to go ahead with it!

I have Piglet tattooed on my thigh :D I had it done in 1998 and paid £10 extra for the anesthetic cream (I'm a wimp  ) Although the cream didn't work that well, probably due to my EDS, it wasn't too bad. I had no problems with it at all. I was told to put the cream they use for piles on it, preparation H, and it was great!!!!!

Good luck with your dragon hun:)

Hi,
Just to add my part I have 3 tattoo's and haven't had any probs. Although I too can trace the outline(although this is a good thing as they're just below my trouser line (on my back) so I can find them before I show peeps (wouldn't want any embarrassing moments! ))

Blimey Kayzee ... You having a piglet tattoo does surprise me!!!!!

Go for it Shellbell. I had my first tattoo done 3 weeks ago on the very top of my left arm (designed by my husband) and I have had no problems. I felt really nervous before having it done but it didn't even hurt. It just felt like a little tickle. Quite relaxing!! And even more pleasing, it didn't bleed loads or scab up afterwards.

To reiterate what Sez said ... be careful and make sure you see a reputable tattooist and ensure that you take good care of it while it's healing.

Let us know how it goes!! Good luck!

Is tatoo safe?

Postby anniedanielle » Wed Feb 11, 2009 4:16 am

Hi all!

I don't have the official EDS diagnosis yet, but I do have officially hypermobility...
My skin issues aren't as bad as I know they could be, it's just a little bit strechy, I bruise easily and don't heal well. But it's not as bad as some others on the boards... paper cuts don't make horrible scars for example... they just take a week to heal instead of a day or two, for example. My issues are mostly with my joints.

I've been wanting a tatoo for a while now, and at first I put it off because I wasn't sure of what design I wanted or exactly where, and it's not something you decide lightly! Plus, I thought : if I still want it in 6 months or a year, then I'll be sure I really want one and it's not just me being crazy! And of course, I wanted to find the right place, with good sterilization and whre someone I knew had already gone, if possible!

But after learning about hypermobility and EDS, and realizing how badly I'm healing recently, I've put it off even more because I'm wondering if it could be a really bad idea in my situaion!

Could it be that the tatoo would turn out horrible? Or take forever to heal? Or both?

Has anyone with mild skin problem due to HMS has gotten a tatoo?

Thanks,
Annie-Danielle

Perspnally, I scar badly, however, I don't find that my tattoos have had many issues except for taking a while to heal. A tattoo is kinda different to a cut.
