Seizing up

Postby Hevsie » Mon Jan 09, 2006 1:16 pm

Does anyone else suffer like this?
I went to see Narnia last night - and after sitting in a cinema chair for getting on for 2 1/2 hours, I can still hardly move.
Seems so strange to seize up, as usually I'm so bendy!

Yes, I seize up when I sit still for a long time too. When I'm here at the PC, I tend to go and get a drink or something just so i can move around, otherwise it's a struggle.

I know I'm going to suffer after going to the cinema and tend to look at the running times of films before I decide to go  In general, I seize up all over if I'm in one position for too long. If I watch a film at home at night, I'm forever fidgeting and always feel the urge to stretch whichever part of me has been scrunched up for too long :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Yep - lesson learnt as far the cinema goes. I hadn't been for about 7 years (other half won't go out). So my friend took me for a treat.
I wasn't aware of how much fidgeting I do until last night, when I couldn't stretch out, and wander about as usual.

I love going to the cinema, so it's just one of those things I struggle with. Fortunately, Cineworld have quite a decent amount of leg room, but I always fidget all the way through, stretching my back, legs, shoulders and generally upsetting whoever is unfortunate enough to be sitting around me! And I end up waiting until everyone else has left, so I can stagger out even slower than usual and get sorted out into the wheelchair again (can't sit in the chair to watch a film - it's far too uncomfortable!) without hoards of people flooding by. Then I spend the rest of the evening complaining that everything feels all locked up.

Yes, cinemas, theatres, courses/meetings for work, church, weddings, etc.
It's very common in HMS for being in one position to cause pain. We need the space and the opportunity to get up, move around, stretch and fidget.

The worst time for me was last Oct when we went to see Ken Dodd at Birmingham hippodrome- he was really boring anyway (hubby loved it but I thought he was RUBBISH!!!) For those of you who know, Ken Dodd does not do short shows, we were there from 7:30 till just after midnight (and it hadnt finished when we left)...at about 12:15 I got up and walked out, I was in AGONY.... Told hubby to stay as I just needed to get out and walk around and was happy to wait outside but he came out with me..

Moral - DO NOT GO SEE KEN DODD IF YOU HAVE HMS!!!

I'd love to see King Kong, but apparently it's 3 hours long! Hubby and I agreed it's out of the question, so I'll have to wait 'til it's out on DVD. We're both disappointed, but he'll still be able to see it on the big screen. :(

I very rarely go to the pictures. The nearest cinema is almost an hour away by car and it's expensive. The only time I really go is with my son (10) so nobody really notices me wriggling about and fidgeting coz they're mostly kids

I get very stiff in my hips at the cinema. mind you not many people notice cos by the time I've got all legs, bag, coat, crutches sorted enough to stand up and walk out they've all left :) The stiffness does wear off after a bit but till then I walk even more like a womble than I usually do :?

I no longer go to the theater for that reason(well and at home you can take breaks without missing anything).Unfortunately I am also a college student and can't do that when it comes to three hour lectures. My doctor was so helpful though telling me it's a life long condition and I'd better get used to it. That was really helpful

Maybe they would let you get up and have a break after a bit. Do you have to go 3 hours without a break? When I was at uni we had a break every hour no matter how long the lecture. I didn't have as many problems then as I do now, but they would help students with disabliliies wherever they could, it may be that as it's a long-term condition they have to help you, could be worth talking to a student disability advisor or someone like that.
Not a very helpful attitude from the doc :x I think I may have met a few of his mates.... :?

Actually my profs are amazing once I get up the nerve to tell them. I had some bad experiences with telling others so I get really nervous when it comes to telling people now. After they find out though they end up brainstorming ideas to make things easier. One even called breaks for the whole class when I got really bad last semester because I hated being the only one standing. My class loved me.
