Raising awareness

Postby Englishgremlin1 » Sat Mar 17, 2012 8:48 pm

I wasn't quite sure where to put this so if the moderators move it I won't be offended!

A couple of weeks ago the care agency who provide my support asked me to give a talk to help train the carers in how to deal with Hypermobility and EDS. The office very kindly sent me a load of information leaflets and I prepared a power point and the talk of about half an hour. I didn't know until I got there that there had also invited the teachers to teach the health and social care course at the local college. Most people in the room had not heard of Hypermobility and were amazed when I showed them how it affects all sorts of things. The end result has been very good in that I have heard that the teachers from the college took what I said on board and are hopefully going to include some coverage of it in their training programme. Also the carers have appreciated knowing why things are a problem as well as that they are problems.

I'm sharing this is perhaps an idea for other people who may be able to spread awareness in this simple way and get more people to know about Hypermobility.

Go you!

Every so often I'm asked to schedule my appointments when they've got a trainee in as an example of the wacky stuff bodies can get up to while apparently 'normal' at first glance. I'm in the habit of carrying literature too, most are genuinely curious once they've seen serious bendiness. ;)

I can handle a medic or three but I'm not sure I could do what you've done. Well done that man. :)
