Thumb fusion

Hi i am new to this forum,very informative and interesting.I have just had thumb fusion surgery 3 days ago.Yes i had concerns about the procedure whether i would be able to use thumb for my many tasks and things you do day to day.First two days was unbearable as painkillers did not suit me,then medication changed and things settled slightly.I still am experiencing lots of pain but every now and again i seem to have strong spasms of pain which sends me through the ceiling nearly.I thought i had strong threshold for pain but beginning now to think not.I wondered if this is normal for first few days and does settle down in time.I also had titanium plate and 6 screws in thumb joint too.Got a very heavy cast on at the moment.

Do you have HMS/EDS-H? I am asking because healing can be affected by this condition, and what is 'normal' for us can vary.

Hi Everyone,

I saw my thumb surgeon yesterday - plus one of his colleagues as he wanted to discuss my options with him - and after having another series of x-rays and a joint injection to provide some temporary relief, they have decided to put me on their list for surgery. The 2 surgeons are going to work together, which caused a bit of a stir amongst the nurses as apparently this is quite irregular. I am not exactly sure what they are going to do as it all went a bit over my head, but they did mention using either my tendon/ligament to wrap around the base of the tumb and I think they mentioned fusion as well. Hopefully I will get a letter soon that will explain things in more detail. They have said it should be in about 3 months time but as they have to synchronise their schedules it may take a bit longer than that.

I will give you more of an update once I get the paperwork.

So 7 years on from my original post which started this thread about thumb fusions- Here I am again. There were several years when the thumb(s) were bearable and didnt cause serious disabling pain ...but now for the las few weeks I have had very severe pain im y thumbs - bith of them - i am pretty much wearing spika bandages all the time now ( I take them off at night). The original consultant/surgeon has now retired - so I am going to see my GP later this week and am hoping to get a referral - What are peoples views - should I get referred back to Prof Graham or to a hand surgeon? or both ? I need to find a Hand surgeon in Bedford, Cambridge, Milton Keynes , Northampton or possibly London wo has some understanding of EDS 3 . The lower thumb joints are subluxing and are v painful all the time. any suggestions/opinions welcome.
