Shoulders

Postby linzi » Wed Apr 12, 2006 12:49 am

Heya,
i had a capsular shift on my right shoulder last and it hasnt worked, my shoulder has started dislocating again.
The surgeon offered to fusse it but i reffused, but now he is lost as what to do.
So was wondering if anybody knew or had any experience of a operation which could help cause i really dnt want my shoulder fussed.

Hi Linzi, sorry I don't have any advice about your shoulder but the fact that your hand is purple sounds to me that it's not a nerve that's trapped but a vein, the blood doesn't seem to be getting out of your hand. Is it swollen? Is it warm or cold? I think you should get that checked out ASAP. Nerve impingement would cause a loss of feeling, blood flow impingement would cause a loss/change of sensation but also colour changes.

Hi Linzi,

Not much I can offer really just empathy as I'm almost in the same situation as you although my should does go back in. I waiting to see a new Orthopod consultant whom my GP has referred me (after changing the referral to this guy as "he's more of a thinking Dr") I haven't a clue what "a thinking Dr" is other than one that doesn't want to try any further sugery with out really looking at the long term and treating me as a whole rather than just looking at my shoulders.
I will let you know how I get on when I see him.
Sorry I can't give you any solutions, I really wish i could :sorry:
My best advice for now is to get a comfy polysling and support the arm, it should help a little with the tingling and coldness.

I'd be inclined to move my shoulder just slightly to try and take the pressure of, even for a wee while at a time. Maybe you could try a sling? That would lift your shoulder up slightly (if it's done right) and should take the pressure off. That's doesn't sound right. In my capacity as a First Aider I'd have you off down the hospital if I saw that, but then I do tend to err on the side of caution.

Hi Linzi

That sound about right. If your pulse is OK then the circulation must be working. I think that some kind of support would be needed for your shoulder right now. It would help to reduce the shoulder movement.
Sorry I have no further advice.

Take care

Hi Linzi, I have a trapped nerve and nerve damadge from my capsular shift, when it is bad I sit with a pile of cushions or pillows on my knee with my elbow at 90degrees and my forearm as parrallel to my collar bone as poss, I was advised to do this after my wrist surgery as it is apparently the only position where the bones in your arm are neutral.
The pillow thing can also be done to the side with your forearm pointing forwards as you sit but not at such a height.

When I go to bed I tend to sleep on my side, if my shoulder is sore I put a small cushion between my arm and my side to act as a wedge to stop my shoulder rotating too much in my sleep.

I hope you get something sorted soon, a few years ago a surgeon mentioned artificial ligaments to me, I don't know much about them but it has been mentioned about my ankle too.

heya
Like the suggestion of pillow at night lol, every time i move at night the shoulder dislocates in a diffrent direction and the pain wakes me up. Giving it a try tonight lol.
The surgeon got back to me saying there was a guy in Liverpool who is intrested in my shoulders :? And has sugested a capsular shrinkage but he says the chance of it working are very small because the other op was open.
Maybe Prof Bird might be able to cum up with something.

Hi Linzi,

I had 2 capsular shrinkages on my right shoulder before they opened it up and then another arthroscopy to remove all the scar tissues that had built up inside around the joint. I'm now back to square 1 again and hoping my new Orthopod can help.
Hope you had a good nights sleep, did the pillow help?

My right shoulder moves around a lot, and I have to prop it at night. In particular, I use a 'squeezy' pillow, it's full of tiny polystyrene (sp?) beads and feels like a lightweight gel. I have these in several shapes, including the 'round the neck', horshoes shaped one, and I find this great to prop my shoulder. I put the middle of the horshoe, with very little filling, underneath my arm so it comes around both sides (if you can picture this) It gives good support but is very lightweight.

May be worth a try

grr this is 3rd attempt at posting i keep knocking a key on laptop.

feel free to move mods not sure if posting in best place.

I have woken this morning with usual stiffness and pain in lower back (SI joints - not been good since pregnancies severe SPD) but today i have awful pain in left shoulder and although i was putting more weight than normal on crutches yesterday (knee was painful even with knee brace on) i think the shoulder pain could be from lieing on my side in bed. I have had this b4 and know it will ease in time but not sure what is causing it. Am i doing something in my sleep or is it just from my body weight on that side. I stayed off work to rest and tried sleeping on other side but soon found that got painful so gave up. I hate sleeping on my back. Is that the oinly solution? any ideas?

Thanks Elaine
