pigmented villo-nodular synovitis :/

Postby bearone » Sat Aug 21, 2010 7:54 am

after reading the 'knee surgery' forum and seeing just how many of us have problems with our knees, i was wondering if anyone has any knowledge on the above? i was diagnosed with pigmented villo-nodular synovitis (pvns) following an arthroscopy after a couple of trips to A & E with severe pain and swelling. pvns is a "series of small tumours" on the synovial membrane behind my kneecap, but can be present in ANY joint in the body. pvns is described as being linked to 'severe trauma' e.g. being in a car crash or being knocked over. however, being hypermobile, i am now wondering if my pvns could be as a direct result of constant over-bending and knee-joints moving way too much in every direction since i was born? it probably didn't help that i was very active as a child and was very into gymnastics (bendy is good in gymnastics hehe) and then went on to spend a lot of time in the gym as a young adult, fighting through pain because i just put it down to 'no pain no gain', and although it had been commented by family and doctors that i was 'double-jointed', hypermobility was never 'diagnosed' until i was about 26. just wondered if anyone else here has had pvns diagnosed and treated and know whether it CAN be as a result of hypermobility? i've had a mixture of chemo- and radiotherapy twice, but sadly it didn't work at all, gave no relief, and i feel like i've been given up on now  i'm new to this site, and finding out so many things that i didn't know, about pain management, specialists, different surgeries etc, and this new information has got me querying MANY things now, that i suppose i've just 'accepted' through life; the pain, the sleepless nights, the tense muscles, the aching body, depression etc. i've always felt like i am 'bothering' the doctors when i go to them, especially for things like the above that can sometimes (to others) appear 'invisible'. i'm planning to go back to my gp next week, to ask for stronger meds and possibly a sleeping 'aid' too, and am properly planning the appointment, and writing down all the things that i want to ask, so that i don't leave without mentioning something - cos there are MANY things (which i believe are ALL linked to hypermobility). i am determined now to find answers and to get decent medication and to finally (hopefully!) after at least 13 years that i can recall, have some pain-free days and some SLEEP! x :(

Hi, that sounds horrible. I hope you find some answers. I just wanted to suggest you book a double appointment with the GP if possible. I did when I went with a long list and it really took the pressure off and allowed me time to explain and him time to help.

Thanks Jen :) I'm going to do just that - book a double appointment - hoping to get the 'nice' doctor, who's a regular at our surgery, instead of the ones who come in at odd times and know NOTHING about my medical history. I'm really putting a lot into my appointment planning, cos I feel I have so much to say, to ask, etc. Anxiety and depression doesn't help in the "thinking am bothering the doctors", but I really need to get past that and find some answers and stronger medication for myself. Am currently on Co-codamol, Diclofenac and Fluoxetine anti-depressants, but have been on the first two for 13 years now :( as they are taken for the pvns, but I get no pain relief for the hm side of things (the muscle aches, the fatigue, the sleepless nights etc) - the only thing that works relatively well is the diclofenac for the tumours, that's it. I so desperately want to experience some pain-free (or least MINIMAL pain) days and definitely need some sleep! I'm constantly running on empty and that's no good when I have a very energetic 7 yr old boy to love and contend with every day lol. I've been offered nothing so far for the hm, but after reading things on the forum here, I KNOW there ARE so many options available, and I NEED to find them and talk about them. Thanks for your reply Jen :D :bye: xxx
