We have a memory foam topper that the inlaws got us. Our actual mattress is a bit too firm for my liking so the topper helps a lot.

just randomly... found a really cheap 3 inch thick memory foam topper, good for hard beds in particular.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Memory-Foam-Mat ... B00161Z02A

amazon do plenty of really cheap ones, thinner ones too :)

just random comment incase it may interest anyone, just bought one myself, waiting for it to arrive, will report back :)

i'm currently using a single topper on a single bed until i get my own flat, then i'll be getting a double bed and one of these cheap double bed sized toppers! i was stressing about being able to afford a double bed sized one but now i'm not- thanks for posting the link :bday:

iv got a memory foam mattress (turned upside down though becuase its like a brick. the underneath foam is nice and soft) with a memory foam topper on top. Its like sleeping on a cloud, you just melt right into it
When people come over and they sit on the bed they stop mid sentance and say 'my god this bed is amazing!
Its great for me becuase i can sleep on my side and there is less pressure on my hips and knees. also the memory foam conducts heat so its like sleeping on a hot water bottle.

Im at my parents for a few days in my old bed and its like sleeping on the coffee table. I miss my bed so much already :bday:

it was my parents before they got a new one. You can get memory foam toppers in alot of department stoes, and shops that sell beds, bedding, etc. Some supermarkets also sell them.
Try to get one from somewhere where you can have a good poke of the topper before buying. Some toppers flatten right down when you lie on them so don't offer much cushioning. It is worth paying a bit extra for a thicker one and one that bounces back well.

If you can't afford a memory foam topper a spare duvet under your bottom sheet can make your bed alot softer and help support the joints.

right, heres my update on the amazon memory foam topper. Was very stiff when new...woke up in agony the next day. Its getting alot better though as I sleep on it. Alot more comfy than the actual matress underneath. I would suggest the 2 inch version maybe for an actual matress and the 3 inch one for like a fouton (however u spell it) as my boyfriend house has a fouton thingy.
A good thing to get with it, if u were gonna get one, would be a thin duvet cover just to put ontop and underneath the bed sheet. That would give less pain when u first start using it :) worth the money for what it is :) my boyfriend believes it might be one of the original ones, u know, the ones they first had on TV(something to do with NASA)

afaik the density (kg/m-cubed, most m f mattress companies offer 50kg or 75kg/m cubed of the foam) and your weight also play a role in how soft/hard/supportive the mattress is and how long it will last.

and apparently the 'wrong' way of packing the mattress for delivery can damage, even ruin the foam- the 'right' way apparently requires some expensive 'vacuum packing machine'- 'wrong way' you can get a badly squashed mattress that never again properly fluffs up/stays hard (some 'horror' experiences can be found on youtube)- the 'right way' means it actually fluffs up/expands as you unpack it, really expands from the first bit of air it gets (mine, 'vacuum packed', felt kind of 'alive' when I unpacked it  ), is soft/giving straight away!!- mine said it would take , think some 8 hrs of lying flat to 'fully' expand, but I actually felt no noticeable difference-
it was bliss from the first moment!

chemical smell- apparently if the foam itself was made in china (most mattress companies buy in the foam and then turn them into mattresses/cut it into toppers) then that smell is quite common due to some chemicals they use- if it's made in britain/US, they dont use the same chemicals= no weird smell

and apparently m f m best like/last best/longest on continental style 'lots of' narrow slats (like you get in ikea).

I have a single-bed memory-foam mattress topper that I got for £25 from H&M, and I wouldn't be without it now. I sleep much less painfully with it.

Hi
Memory Foam is not for everyone. I bit the bullet and bought an expensive one and I ended up worse off than before as far as sleep is concerned. It seems that about 10% of people generate too much heat on them and so they sink into the foam further and that makes them even hotter! The heat form the mattress was so bad that I had to keep getting up to cool down! Honest! It went back. I do have a memory foam pillow that I love though. I do have about 4 that lie by the bed and I swap them all the time. I hope you get on well with the mattress as I know some people love them. :D

I go back and forth deciding if memory foam makes me better or worse in the morning. Had a 4" one that was too thick ~ really hard to maneuver in the bed just to sleep or roll over etc. - so I gave it away. Got so sore and tired sleeping on my newer firm mattress that I ordered a second one but this time 3" thick - so it wouldn't completely consume me in bed.

I wake up so very stiff and sore still. It feels soft and comfy -- but if I'm lucky enough to sleep in a night -- I do wake up very stiff and sore for up to an hour after getting out of bed. My physio said it was because I likely sleep with arms, legs etc. at their end range ~ and that end range of motion is more than the general public ~ so in the foam I may be encouraging over-stretching in my sleeping hours and when I wake up I have to manually undo my hands and arms with my other arms asisst. So I keep trying it ~ then taking it off.....then trying it again. Mostly it's on the bed -- a queen where I sleep blessedly alone with the exception of my sweet kitty cat. So yes it's so wonderful to climb into it's softness ~ But can't be sure if it's causing worse distress by how it cradles me in sleep. I do wake up warm to hot sometimes ~ I see that can be from the mattress topper ~ but that's really for me a bit of a minor issue as it's kinda chilly where I'm at by the ocean year-round.

Bless you all :-)
