Lycra support suits for little ones

Postby melimo » Wed Apr 20, 2011 6:39 pm

Hi all,
Charlie was back at physio today and is still very floppy and lacking balance. He starts his rebound
course in a fortnight and that runs for six weeks. But his physio mentioned when this was done she was going to see about getting a lycra suit to help him support his joints. He's doing lots of core stability work but it seems the suit will be needed too. At one point we had talk of afo's but I don't know if it would be them or lycra or both.
Has anyone any knowledge? Or experience of the lycra? It seems an uncomfortable option during the summer although physio said they are made to keep them cool. Thanks for any advice. Mel x

There are 2 types of lycra suits:
Seconds Skin is an ozzy company. they do the measuring in the uk and then go back and make the suits/splints and then bring them back and fit them. The over all around time is about 3months.
This suit has plastic bones and different types of fabric to support the body.

Job skin is a company based in Leicestershire. If my memory is right from my training. They make Jobsuits so they can be worn as a breathable base layer. Chose a funky colour with matching stiching and it can be top worn with trousers/shorts.
This suit is made out of different types os lycra in different weaves and patches to support the body.

They dont tend to cover the ankle/feet so AFO's may be a good idea or possibly DAFOs( dynamic ankle foot orthotics) as they are lighter and thiner plastic.

I work a fair bit in this area so do feel free to PM me and ask any questions.

Thank you Jess that's really helpful info. I think it may be the second one you mentioned which we may be getting. When I mentioned the heat of wearing something like that our physio told us they are breathable but some children are reluctant to wear them in the summer as they can be seen under shorts etc.
I guess I'm just going to have to be patient until after his rebound course and see what happens. He got his orthotic boots today so I suppose that is the first step. Physio mentioned getting him settled in the boots before adding any type of afo's. It's all quite confusing tbh as questions always arise after we have left our appointments.
Charlie's diagnosis is relatively new so I'm still very anxious perhaps too anxious about all these things that are happening and the effects they have.
Thank you again for your knowledge. Mel x

Hi,
Well found out today Charlie is being measured for lycra next week to help support his hips. Still don't really know much about it, and bit confused as to how it fits and toiletting but I guess we will be finding out soon.
Will update more as we progress. Mel
