Hip replacement - chair recommendations, non OAP style!

Postby Rachel1985 » Fri Aug 10, 2012 8:07 pm

Hi there,
My mum has severe osteo-arthritis, and has to have an urgent hip replacement (having been ignored for the last 4 years it's now not surprisingly complicated matters). As a result she has to have a bone graft, and the physio has said the sofa is not suitable and to get an individual chair. My understanding is that an OT will visit etc to advise on measurements etc, but I wanted to start finding out prices etc and doing some research. Can anyone recommend websites for chairs, ideally ones that don't look like they belong in a nursing home, as it might well be the final straw!

Thanks
Rachel

A community OT is likely to have contacts with local firms who can supply a range of chairs and it may be best discussing this with them first. It could be that in the short term the chair needs to be higher than it will need to be in the long term so they may be able to talk you through short and long term solutions. Depending on your Mum's needs a normal sofa chair on chair raisers may be sufficient or she may need a wing back type chair with more back support. An OT may recommend a rise/recline chair but equally may recommend against as a means of maintaining Mum's ability to sit->stand where a rise recline will do this for her and may effectively de-skill.

I suppose that last post boils down to "talk to the OT" before you do anything. A community OT will be able to visit more than once in order to get this right for your Mum.

Hi all

When my daughter needed supported seating temporarily (after her spinal op) it was lent to us after the OT reccomended it, so don't be too quick to spend money!

Thank you to you both - good advice. I hadn't thought of the possibility of borrowing one, which would be great, so we'll ask about that.

I think based on the physio's advice it won't be possible to just increase the height of the sofa due to a number of factors, but I think we'll hold off and wait til we see an OT

Thanks again
