I experience this at times and not sure what to do about it. I would definitely bring it up with them at stanmore as they may be able to take a look at it

I made the mistake of going for a massage week before last. Hadn't done this before and thought it might help with aching muscles. The sports therapist massaged my knee cap very deeply, which then went "clonk". I pointed that out and before I knew what was happening, he had sorted of picked up my knee cap between his fingers and wobbled it from side to side, which felt quite sharp and painful but was over quickly. I think he thought he was mobilising it.

I walked out fine, but the next day I felt something in my knee slide and since then my knee has felt very unstable and makes a clunking sound whenever it bends forwards with weight on it. It also keeps cracking like gunfire. When it cracks it feels like it should provide relief, but it doesn't. It feels widely loose and unstable. My GP and physio both say all ligaments in place. Physio says that I may have subluxed it and has taped it up. This has helped, but I still can't walk more than a few hundred metres without it becoming painful and it can't take any kind change of direction/twisting motion. I have to go round corners very gingerly .

I've told my GP that it still hurts 10 days later and she just says to go to A&E. I am loathe to do so as I suspect that when they see I can walk without hobbling, they'll just send me away.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be? Is this just typical after effects of a sublux and will it gradually lessen? I've never subluxed before and neither have I ever had any problems with my knees until I let that chap touch it. Why oh why didn't I just leave well alone...

Hi all

cracker - if you ask your GP then he/she can refer you to the right person. It does vary from area to area.

If you're already seeing a physio it could be that he/she would be able to refer you for knee supports. My daughter's physio has just referred her to "Appliances" for knee and wrist supports, she said it's the same department that does the insoles, but as Rosie said, it can vary from area to area. Won't cost you anything to ask though.

Looking for advice

Postby magical » Sat Jul 07, 2012 5:32 pm

hi,

I wondered if I can have some advice please.

Im may i got ill with a virus, I haven't been able to walk since. Before this i could walk about 8 metres.

I am in rehab at the moment doing daily physio to try and build my muscles up. However my knees are just to bendy to stay up. I have a knee brace for my right knee and a foot brace due to foot drop. I got a new knee brace for my left knee but it isn't any good.

I've only been in rehab for a week and am home for the weekend. The problem was i wasn't taught how to transfer myself. In hospital i have two people to transfer, so mum has had to help me at home. I have also lost the ability to crawl, which i was doing before i went into rehab.

I just wanted some advice if anyone can recommend a knee brace and also if ligaments can get stronger so my knees could stabilise themselves.

many thanks

Lidl have some knee supports less than £7, bought two for my DD 13, who like them. They have a whole cut out for the knee, 2 upright supports on the side of the knee so you can still bend the joint and lots of velcro strapping to fit any individual. :)
I got the foot one for myself as hit my ankle months ago and taking ages for the ligaments to sort themselves out.

We have a thread or two on knee braces, if you use the search tool to look for this. I recommend someone to teach you how to transfer by yourself, this will probably be the occupational therapist. They may be able to provide some aids to help with this as well. Have you tried or been advised to try hydrotherapy to slowly build up your strength in your knees. You can also get resistance machines, such as reclined bikes - these are often just little pedal machines that you can use when sat in your chair/wheelchair. Speak to your physio/OT about your options.

In regards to your knees, it's more likely that you have lost muscle tone in your legs. Us bendies tend to use our muscles to stabilise our limbs/joints because our tendons and ligaments are too stretchy. It isn't possible to fix the tendons/ligaments but we can tone up and build up our muscles, thus stabilising the joints. It sounds like when you became ill with the virus, you probably lost a lot of muscle mass, particularly in the legs, which meant that everything has just become very floppy.

Just for those of you with allergies to things like braces and tubigrip, you can ask your GP for a prescription for stockingette. We get it for stacey to put on after her psoriasis creams and we've found it makes it easier under her braces. We had tried to buy it when she had the broken ankle, but no chemists seemed to stock it, we did get a big roll from the nurse at the treatment room which was a bonus :D

Many thanks for replying. I came out of rehab on monday after 3 weeks. I wasn't kept any longer due to my body being to exhausted with the daily physio. I now have a sliding board which is a massive help. I also went back to orthotics and am getting another knee brace the same as my other knee which is brilliant.

Im still amazed that i could have lost the muscle in such a short amount of time.

Best knee supports for HMS and arthritis.

Postby Littlelady » Wed Sep 19, 2012 1:06 pm

Hi everyone. I've been looking online for a knee support. I have arthritis in my knee (possibly caused by HMS) and I am experiencing a great deal of pain from it when at work. I've read that knee supports can reduce some of the pain caused by arthritis but there are that many different supports out there I don't know which type to get.

Can anyone recommend a knee support suitable for people with arthritis? Or if anyone knows which styles are most suitable that would be great.

Thank you.
