Does anyone suffer from hypersensitivity?

Postby Guest » Thu Jun 22, 2006 7:07 pm

Hi another new recruit here.

Thought i would start with an easy question.

My OT (who also has hms) gave me some info on hypersensitivity - but I've lost it !!! :(

Wondered if anyone else has something similar - for starters sensitive skin? Get irritation from soaps, detergents, make up etc?

Smelly things - my particular pet hate :x bad sneezy fits from anything perfumed - especially when on someone else when they overload!?!

Acute hearing - hear things (other than voices!) that other people can't hear?

Photophobia - real intolerance to bright lights, camera flashes, sunlight Etc?

Would really appreciate some feedback and links to helpful sites if anyone has suggestions.

 Many thanks - speak soon

Yup I get rashes/blotches etc from everything, my skin is so unbelievably sensitive.
I tried using lavander body wash last week because thats supposed to be really gentle and it brought me out in a terrible rash.
Yup sensitive to sunlight too!

Take care

Hi titch

I have sensitive skin and have to be really careful about soaps, washing powder, make up etc. My 2nd daughter is the same. When she was about 9 months old she developed dermititis overnight from head to toe, and this carried on for a fortnight until she developed chicken pox.
It turns out that she had reacted to the chicken pox virus (I forget the name, one of the herpes?) for the whole time she was incubating chicken pox. We had a wonderful few weeks whewre she was covered in dermititis that needed moisturising, and chicken pox, that needs drying (calamine lotion). All we could do was swab her with boiled water!

Back to the topic, we are also both very fair skinned and burn very easily in the sun.
I also have always had very acute hearing (school teacher hearing we call it) although it has npow reached a point where I hear background noise so loud that it interferes with other noises, like someone talking to me.
I also have mild photophobia, and find I cannot drive far in the summer without my sunglasses.

I don't know how many of these things are related to the HEDS/HMS, I think some things exist in the general population therefore some of us will have them as well. Does that make sense?

:bye:

Oh dear!!!

I can hear everything too! Sometimes it's so irritating, to hear absolutely everything... though I cannot understand it ;) I'm also sensitive to light (it wakes me up at 4.30 in the morning). I've been trained to be under the sun, so I'm not allergic to that 8)

Hi,
I have really sensitive hearing too - like Rosie to the point where I hear background noise louder than people's conversations (esp. irritating in lectures). I am finding some noises are painful at the minute - the vacuum cleaner for one.
It sounds weird, but I can hear when a TV or monitor is on - I don't mean like conversation on the TV, but even if it's on standby, I can hear a buzzing noise.

Not so sensetive a sense of smell, although I am good at putting names to smells others cant place (the other day after a cleaning frenzy in the house the living room smelled like the dentist, as soon as I said it everyone else realised why it seemed familiar to them!)

Always had sensitive skin when I was younger, although it's not nearly as bad now - my worst sensitivity was light, and my mum is seriously photosensitive.

i hear electricity buzz too! its sooo annoying. i hear it even when everything is off. its just the power in the wires around the house that i hear. its one of the reasons why i love travelling with the circus so much- once the generator is off, there is no power coming in my caravan, so no buzz! i sleep like a baby when im on tour! :D

i also hear other sounds more than other people, and loud noises hurt. also have slighly sensitive skin and smell but it doesnt bother me that much. i get light photosensitivity quite frequently, but only very mildly.

My daughter also suffers with acute hearing. She is particularly sensitive to loud noises, like loud radios noisy motorbikes and things like that. When she was smaller really loud noises hurt her and she was very distressed. She still has the same problem now. She is also sensitive to Avon products.

I think I have sensitive hearing cos I've just been nodding along to all your posts like crazy! I have to turn all the electrics off in my room before I can sleep because they buzz, and my flatmate has now got used to turning the music down the moment I come in because I just can't cope with loud noises.

Ah well :|

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of your replies - maybe there is a link with hms - we are such sensitive souls!

I'll have to do a bit more research - see if there is a reason for it.

People thing I'm nuts when I mention electrical buzzing - even the tiny clock on the cooker drives me crazy when I can hear from the lounge!!!

Glad it's not me cracking up

If I / or anyone else finds out anymore - should post some links.

howdy
yup - hypersensitivity here...perfumes, soaps, bright lights, a lot of chemicals, plants and flowers....rashes, sneezes, burning eyes...fun fun fun....

I use perfume free, soap free body washes, perfume free deodorants, use antihistimines, moisturisers and keep out of bright sun lol...

Another sensitive soul here- my skin is really sensitive, i use simple deodrant and soap. I wear perfume on my clothes because if i wear it on my skin it just irritates it, make-up irrates my skin (not that it bothers me not to wear it)!

I have thesame make up problem - also facial cleansers to get rid of those much despised zits irritate my skin, although i have just recently found one with NO colours, scent, soap etc...so far its been working...

I forgot to mention in my previous post that I have hypersensitive hearing...I hear the 'silent' buzz of electronics which sometimes makes me want to crawl in a hole. One thing I have found odd though is sometimes I cant hear 'normal' noises clearly (ppl talking, tv, music) or if there is ppl talking and a tv on I cant hear either clearly and have to try really hard to focus my hearing...i refer to it as 'tuning in' when this happens...does this happen to anyone else with hypersensitive hearing?? or am i just an oddball lol

With regard to the hearing and hypersensitivity part of the post this may be helpful:- hyperacusis.org

People with hyperacusis are a small, very rare group of "sound sensitive" individuals. They are usually not born with it, but develop a narrow tolerance to sound, most commonly from noise trauma (sudden or cumulative over time). Other common causes include head injury, ear damage from toxins or medication, Lyme disease, air bag deployment, viral infections involving the inner ear or facial nerve, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome. Some people with hyperacusis have such a severe intolerance to sound, that it is difficult and sometimes impossible for them to function in our everyday environment with all its ambient noise. All sounds may be perceived as too loud, although for most patients with hyperacusis, the high frequencies are particularly troublesome.

i've always been a bit sensitive to high pitched sounds, but used to love loud music(loud bass never bothered me, but ohh the whack of a snare drum, which was funny playing in a band...). But with the onset of HMS pain i became less and less tolerant of loudness.
And in the last years I also find background noise very distracting, have to have telly on loud to hear what people say and have to turn it down as soon as you have a segment with music as it feels very loud. Also if other people talk in the room, even quieter than telly, I can't 'hear' speech on tv, it actually is a bit like I can hear it, but I can't make out words....????
Busy pubs are hell holes cause all I hear is this cacaphony of voices, which on occasion has made me dizzy and nauseous(don't go any more).
Some sounds (nylon, goretex and other man made fibres rubbing on themselves) cover me in goosepimples from head to toe, set my teeth on edge, often without me conciously hearing it.(always had this)
Skin is sensitive and reacts allergically to most metals, perfumed toiletries, insect bites, direct sun.
Also i get sneeze attacks from sudden, slight temperature drops. Through the whole winter I start my day with a sneeze attack just from getting out of bed, in summer it's getting caught by a draught or breeze or forgetting to put extra clothing on as evening comes and off I go.
Another waffly post-why oh why can't I be short and sweet????
