I was diagnosed HMS by a local rheumy who thought I wasn't that flexible really, and that there were no other effects etc etc. I was then diagnosed EDSIII (which yes, is thought to be the same by the experts) by Dr H at UCH. I find that when talking to the uninitiated I tell them I have EDS cos then they take me more seriously and accept that I have other related issues - like skin trouble.

I have big problems with healing - my legs still have very obvious scars from when I had some falls two years ago. At the moment I still have an open wound on my arm which has grown to 1.5 inches long. Still open after 2 months.
the carer was in yesterday and suggeste that boosting my imune system could help - extra vitamins etc..
Going to give it a try and see if it helps.

He he just to throw a spanner in the works!!
Although I heal quite quickly I'm always left with very visible scars, strange thing is though, some of them grow excess scar tissue and others are like tissue paper, my GP finds this very strange. Think they just find me strange in general though!!

Binx,
Same here, exactly, decent healing (but seems noticably slower if I feel particularly ill? Kinda hard to judge though!), 2 types of scars, though I can't remember the proper terms? Key something? Keloid? Can't remember t'other one though. Both are HMS typical.
Vitamins for healing - Vit C - I take a big dose, sustained release tablet every day. I have a theory that us bendy bods need more of certain nutrients than non-bendy folk, especially vit C. If you want to try some bumper size doses for a while, make sure you get the sustained release kind, as huge doses of standard release vit C can give you the runs (or the wobbly charges).
And Vit B something... from green veg. That's all I can remember offhand. Stoopid head day - sorry! ... Zinc maybe? I'm sure there was something else...?
Oh yes - and stay hydrated!!! Very important that one. Hydrated tissues are squishier and much more resistant to any type of stress. Keeping hydrated helps your body get rid of nasty pain inducing toxin build up, as well as delivering all the goods your tissues need to heal well and be happy, healthy tissues.
Happy healing,
S

Shadowgirl you could work in a health food shop, you sell the vitamins well!
The docs just told me to rub hydrocortisone cream over the thicker ones and just take care of the others.

i wish i knew about the issues with scarring when i was younger - it might have prevented the self harm

now, I am left with loads of raised scars, some paper thin and others thick and lumpy. some are red, others are almost silver. Ok I don't think it would have stopped me self-harming admittedly, but I might have thought twice. Now, doctors don't take me seriously - one last week asked how my 'psychological issues' were - i wanted to hit him. the may scars i have drag me down, especially in the summer and i do my best to conceal them which is very difficult but friends and family dont understand and it takes so much effort to explain. I still get the urge to s/h and on a day when im in a lot of pain, it is difficult to overcome.
ok dont think this makes much sense but tis really bugging me and i would love a way to reduce scarring that doesnt leave me with a rash as i have sensitive skin etc.

Loosebones please don't think like that.

Remember there's always someone on here who will be willing to listen.
I'm sure that given time the scars will fade.

many people do crazy things when they are in pain and not believed, we are not designed to cope on our own with everything.
Scars do fade after a time but don't go beating yourself up. share things on here and moan away.

just logged on and looked at my post from last night - kind of garbled. thanks to those who replied, it cheered me a bit - some of the scars have been there for 10 yrs but am still hoping they will fade. might ask the doc on monday f there is anything that will help fade them. hope he doesn't go on about my 'psychological issues' again.

In have long healing skin. eg a simple graze turnes into a big hole and can take up to 3weeks to heal. I use Aloe Vera stuff that is 99.9% pure from Forever Living Products (sorry if it sounds like an ad) and it does help my healing time.
