This may help lianne -

Subluxation - The abnormal movement of the bones that comprise a joint. Not a true dislocation. A partial dislocation.

I used to think that this happened to everyone until Prof G told me otherwise - as far as I can see its everyone else thats odd I'm normal

Thanks Nonya

So could this be what it is when my joints feel like they are coming out of place? It happens frequently in my knees and wrists..is a horrible feeling...Doesnt always hurt and like I said I know they're not dislocating..

Sounds possible Lianne - but me being in my lounge and not being a doctor 'n all - any qualified medic/therapist would be able to clarify. :bye: nx

hi

my hands and fingers are constantly painful and aching. I'm finding it hard to hold a pen now without having to stop after a few mins writing. My wrists feel quite weak at times. Also i seem to have an aching feeling running up both arms, not all the time but maybe a few times a week. Most days i cant make a fist as its too painful. When my daughter asks me to flatten or squash her plasticine for her, i do it but its not nice but i just cant say no to my 3 yr old, bless her.

Interesting to read about how the joints feel they are coming out of place. i feel that way too. My knees in particular feel like they are dislocating all the time and when i bend or straighten my leg, my knees click back very loudly and very painfully! :x Also i've lost 'power' in my knees when walking up steps or the stairs, my legs give way and i have to grab hold of something, feels like my knees cant take my body anymore.

I did feel very alone with this until i found this site. I'm sorry you're all suffering but its nice to know that there are lovely people out there who understand where i'm coming from!!

I know what you mean about the power thing in your knees diamondgeezergirl.... I get that too, thats how my hands and knees often feel and I think youve hit it right on the head with describing it as lack of power....

Pain in back of hand

Postby Natt » Wed Nov 23, 2005 12:18 pm

Hi guys

I have a couple of new ones, but thought Id post this one first. For the last couple of weeks I have had trouble with my right hand. i will be doing something and then I will get a short sharp pain my the tendons/bones on the back of my hand and will drop what Im doing/gripping.

Anyone else got anythign similar? Never had it with HMS before, and its affecting me quite a bit.

(btw, I type for a living :-( )

Hi Natt,

I do a lot of typing in my job as well and the pain in my hands causes a lot of problems. I've started getting this slight spasm from time to time where my fingers jerk a little for no reason. I don't get pains in the tendons like you've describe, though. Could this possibly be your hand objecting if you've done a lot of typing, then gone to grip something? When I finish typing, I have to open and and close my hands a few times to relax my hands and wrists, and I've been told that I sometimes stop typing and do this as well mid-flow. I've been told that when I get a "new" persistant pain, I need to let my GP know - perhaps you should mention it? Another thought it perhaps some kind of repetitive strain? I get shooting pains between my shoulder and my wrists when I type, which my GP thinks may be RSI, but could also simply be an EDS pain :?

Hope this gets better soon!

Hi nat - I am hoping this is not an rsi thing. Try looking at the way you are holding your hand when typing are you inadvertantly back bending your wrist - upwards if you know what I mean thus putting strain on the ligaments etc in the place you describe? Do you use a hand rest or any other stuff that helps with repetetive strain at work? nonya

Hello all

I have this type of pain in my left wrist and hand fairly frequently. It is exactly as you describe and generally results in me dropping something.
Over the last couple of months I have managed to drop books, folders, a kettle (fortunately when it was cold), mugs of tea and loads of other stuff. It has made me very aware of what I am doing and I am developing strategies to compensate - like I slide the kettle across the worktop, and tip it without lifting it off the worktop.

I also have this type of pain in my knee and that gives way as well. I have to make sure I do not go down stairs behind my kids in case I fall on to them, and I always have a firm hold of handrails to try and prevent a fall if it happens.

This seems to be one of the ways my HMS affects me, and causes me more trouble than dislocations, subluxes etc.

Hi rosie,

There used to be a thread on the boards about dropping things and I think you will find you are not alone. My daughter who also has HEDS tries to explain to her exasperated father who bless him tries to understand as the entire contents of the house which we can hold! crash to the floor again. The preventative methods you describe are well worthwhile and a good tip for all of us - to help prevent overuse injury and also nasty accidents! My daughter and I both find this happens with or without pain - its as if the brain has forgotten that the hands are holding something. General tips on the database found via the home page may help those looking for solutions to everyday management of just this type of thing.

As you do have HMS natalie - I think you should get this checked out sooner rather than later to prevent an ongoing chronic problem. I was referred to a hospital occupational therapist with my hands (the rest of me managed to get there too  ) and she had some helpful advice and also some practical help in the form of night splints etc - which for the record did have to be adapted to my hypermobile hands which have a tendancy to split skin etc and still move around in standard splints.

Hi Natalie

I drop things quite a lot when I get pains in my hand. It's worse if I try to hold something with a large diameter, like a pint glass or a jar of mayonnaise - I just can't do it, it's too painful. I wear a splint most days which supports my thumb as I think that's where the pain comes from but I am having a soft tissue hand scan on Dec 8th so I will post any results on here.

Hi girls,

thanks for your messages. My typing is not the problem as such at the moment - I have my chair, desk etc at the right height, and use all the supports for my wrists when on the mouse etc. It seems to be when I am doing something else - i.e. night before last I was just trying to plug the wire into the modem and it happened. My hand doesnt hurt before or after (yes, my knuckles and fingers do, but never my wrists or hands) but this shooting pain is really sharp and hurts!!

I have just started physio again, so i will ask her there if its anything she can help with.

Thanks guys

Hi everyone,

Its so nice to know that I am not the only who drops things. If don't concentrate on what I am doing my hands just let go - but they sometimes let go when they loose all there strentgh and I physically just can't hold anything. To be honest I just thought it was me just being pathetic - People just look at me plain crazy when I try and explain my hands let go or my legs forget to hold me up and fall flat on the floor. They just can't comprehend it is possible. For a long time now I have thought it is all in my head and don't tell anyone that it happens!

take care

That sounds familiar! When I have to walk anywhere, I usually feel better if I just keep walking and thinking about the walking motion. The momentum often carries me along. If I have to stop for any reason, I have to really think about what I'm doing, and concentrate on keeping myself upright and keeping my knees from bending the wrong way and then locking. Sometimes if I get distracted when I'm walking I can suddenly find myself on the floor because my legs "forget" what they're supposed to be doing
