TMJ Dysfunction..

Postby Toe » Mon Oct 10, 2005 9:43 pm

Hi Folks, 8)

Thanks for anyone who replied to my others posts , Ill now start on my 3rd post

Anyways Just wondering if anyone out there suffers with TMJ dysfunction ? My teeth dont meet and i grit and grind ( and cant help any of this mind ) I get pains in and around my eyes, Twitches by my temples and pain there too, My cheeks get so sore and my sinuses really suffer
:(

I was just wondering if any other of my weird symptoms relate to this as i believe the muscles linked in with the TMJ like the SCM and Trapezius cause some very weird and unusual symptoms Too..

Thanks for listening and hope to hear from anyone is it linked to HMS? or is it more of a FM thing?

ta.. (( Hugs )) :P

I was diagnosed with TMJ disfunction last week, was told that it was caused by me subluxing my TMJ, so that would make it a HMS thing in my case at least.

At the moment I don't have any symptons that I can even vaguely relate to this apart from pain and maybe pins and needles in my cheeks and chin.

Hope this helps, send lots of

I've had TMJ since 1990 and originally was told by my dentist that it was from grinding my teeth. At first the dentists thought it was a bad tooth that was giving me such a lot of pain, believe me, I drank a lot of whisky to try to dull the pain - yuk !!! I ended up having all my teeth on the right side root filled and still it hurt, then they finally realised my jaw was sliding and asked me if I wanted an operation to 'trim' my jaw which involved a 6 hour operation where they take your teeth out, cut some jaw away and pin it before sticking the teeth back in - nooooooooooooo way !!!!! Ended up with a gum shield which shredded me gums to bits. I reckon it's HMS related because it's always clicked and clunked since I was a kid and I used to pop it sideways a lot when I was concentrating. Prof Bird at Leeds also says it's HMS related  My symptoms are earache, sore eye, cheekpain and nodule like lumps under my jaw and sometimes my neck, sometimes it burns a bit and feels 'flickery'. If it gets really bad, I find it hard to touch my teeth together and have problems eating.

Hi guys,

All your symptoms are basically the same as mine, but i also do have problems with the muscles in and around my jaw, neck and face which my physio tries to help with now and again, when he does it though its sooo painful i want to cry especially the cheek muscle cos i think i have grinded my teeth since a kid ( wonders how long ive had these problems for )

i get terrible sinus pain at times too , feels like i have an infection with it but it seems to die down and then i think hmm could it have been cos i was grinding or messing with jaw last night, i know sometimes when im stressed or cold i grit my teeth.. such a bad habit

I also got offered the same operation San .... My god i thought NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! i will have to try and live with it but can i ask has yours changed the shape of your face a bit ? ?

Hope your all well

Hi,

I'm a tooth-grinder with chronic sinusitis! I don't think the grinding is HMS-related, but the movement and clicking in my TMJ is. The dentist says the sinusitis is brought on the nerve irritation from grinding and clenching - I think I need to de-stress a bit! I'm getting a tooth guard made (lovely) for night, but hope this means the pain will lessen, and I won't need sinus meds.

Best wishes to all griners and sinusers!

Hi Toe

Know what you mean about about the soreness around your face and neck, sometimes feels like there's an infection brewing up and it burns and throbs. I wouldn't say my TMJ has really changed my face shape but my left cheekbone is much more noticeable as my jaw is slightly to the right, looks like I've got a dent in my face. I have to keep myself in check and shove my jaw back over quite a lot. Sometimes get nerve type pain around the area and cold wind hurts it.

tmj

Postby Guest » Thu Jan 19, 2006 4:09 pm

Hi, I was wondering if people with tmj have one side worse than the other? Interestingly I have much more pain in the right jaw than the left with constant pain in my right shoulder muscle. My neck pain is worse on the right side too.

Hi KimCaroline,

TMJ can be worst on one side yes and this affects the neck muscles, My right is my worst too thats because the hypermobility made it come out of place and it gre funny as I got older. my left has pain but not as noticable as the right, As the tmj is one joint on the whole it will all be affected but you might be more sensitive one that particular side.

But Physio does help ease the symtpoms of TMJ and he can massage the muscles around the jaw and neck to give some relief.

Have a word with your GP for refferal if you dont alreasy see one.

Hope it eases soon

Hi - I think it's my own fault. I bought my partner Thorntons toffee for his xmas and I kept sneaking a bit. It hurt my jaw when I was eating it, but as it was so good I couldn't stop eating it  -That will teach me for sneaking sweets.

Hi all

I have had to wear a Night Bite Splint for years because of tooth grinding and what these recent posts have made me realise is that the side that I have most trouble with (left) is the side that I have most problems with in my neck and shoulder. If I dont wear the splint I get horrendous headaches and I can feel the pain coming from one particular tooth on the left and going right up and over my head. My new dentist has made me a very hard splint that you wear over your top teeth and I hate it but unfortunatly I chew through the softer splints that you wear over your bottom teeth at an amazing rate!! The dentist did offer to refer me and I think I might ask him to so I can get it checked.

Take care

Bite Splints

Postby Guest » Fri Mar 31, 2006 10:02 am

The more enilghtened, and heavenly, dentists can make a custom bite splint to put your TMJ in a "neutral" position. I've been wearing one for ten years (not the same one mind you) and I know right away if it needs adjusting because my TMJ pain comes back. Not every dentist makes these and I have no clue what the NHS view on them is, had mine made by an American dentist .

Hello all,
Hope you are well,
Long time no see! Have actually had a good year for me(if you discount my 3x dislocating shoulder).
One problem which persists is my blooming jaw. Have had terrible trouble lately with it slipping out of joint and giving me earache when I'm in bed!!!
Last time I went to the GP ,with earache and severe vertigo, after checking my ears, she manipulated my jaw which had become 'locked' - once she managed to release it it felt like she had thumped me in the jaw - she said it had become dislocated and stuck. Anyway the earache disappeared straightaway.

Have taken to trying to prop my jaw with the pillow(I have 4 pillows to support various joints when in bed).

My question is, to get some kind of 'jaw' support at night if indeed such a thing exists, do I go to the dentist or gp?

son xx

Best bet is to speak to an oral surgeon, you should be able to get a referal from your dentist.
My jaw dislocates really easily, and has a permanent lean to the left, which is sometimes really obvious in photos, when I am snapped whilst unaware! I had a bite guard made, but I found it more trouble than it was worth. Now I just try not to open my mouth too wide, avoid really chewy things, and if it does come out, I have now a knack of whacking it back into place. I was offered surgery to wire the affected side to replace the ligaments, but I really did not fancy it, so I declined!
I should have read the small print before I signed up for this life!

ive got TMJ, i did the whole retainer deal for 6 months, and got it ajusted, much of the pain went away but i the joint is still hyper mobile and i think i may have the disorder again after being pain free in my jaw for 2 years... but the retainer, ajusted every 2 weeks for 6 months works. mines come back becuase of a traumatic event(got into a fight and punched in the jaw  )

im also thinking of braces since my jaws bite is pretty messed up
