Hi,

There was a discussion about HMS and IBS being related, I cant seem to find it anymore, not sure if its come off because of the idiots mucking about with the virus.

Can someone answer me why IBS and HMS are related please...Im sorry to open it up again but I never found out from the last discussion (if it is still on here can someone tell me where so I can look - thanks!)

I was diagnosed with IBS about 5 years ago, it mostly flares up when I've had too much wheat or dairy. Both things that I crave greatly when cut out completely, too fond of cheese, bread and strawberry milkshakes

Is it some sort of sick joke that you crave the food that sets off your IBS ?????

An annoying one unfortunately. I do notice great improvements in energy, IBS symptoms etc when I do cut them out though

Hi everyone,

It would make a lot of sense if it is related to HMS. Over the last couple of years I have had increasing difficulty going. Which when I think about it is about the same time my joint problems became much worse.
At the moment I havn't been for about 5 days, I have drunk a bottle of syrup of figs, taken senna extra for 5 days in a row drank to the point of popping and no luck.
It is now very painfull, back to the GP for me I think. AGAIN !!!

Also I know my medication makes it worse but sometimes I have no choice. I acctually ended up in A & E a couple of months ago because I was in such pain that I was taking strong pain killers for 2 weeks which made me constipated which ended up pressing on my bladder and I could not pass water. I almost passed out at work I felt so bad. It is getting to that point again so off to the GP :(

Exuse the punn but it's c**p

hiya natnat,

i have similar problems going, or i did until very recently. my tummy doctor put me on movacol, its a powder you add to water (or juice etc) and it stops me getting as constipated although i need to take it every day for it to work, and it took a while to take effect but i feel so much better now. my tummy pain is much lower, i dont feel all full and bloated all the time and my IBS is less annoyed because stuff is moving through my tum better (and the constipation was irritating it).

and i had no relief from the constipation when i tried senna- but i've recently found out that it often makes tummy spasms worse so i guess it just increased the spasm that was causing the constipation!

maybe it's a good idea to ask about movacol? a number of us take it and although it tastes nasty it really does work. and maybe ask to see a tummy specialist? i see a gastroenterologist at St Barts Hospital and they've greatly helped my tummy problems, and they know all about HMS and EDS and treat my tummy taking into account my EDS.

i also find it helpful to use my tens machine on my tummy and stick it on a massage setting, and manually massaging my tummy also helps a little. and stretching my back and tummy muscles sometimes works too as it stimulates my gut to work a bit better.

i hope this helps and you feel a little better soon!

Anyone read the article by Qasim Aziz? I was reading it and a lot of the symptoms on there I get, the fatigue, joint and muscle pain, abdominal bloating , heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea. It was like I was reading about myself

Yep, all the time! I don't have any problem 'going' but it usually sounds like some sort of unholy gasworks in there

My insides make themselves known quite loudly at times too. I really don't know why. I have no other problems in that area (I hasten to add).

I think another visit to the GP is in order. Going through a big flare up phase at the moment where just about anything sets it off, although I think the swine flu didn't help matters :snooty:

Thought this might help - never been particularly 'regular' whatever I eat, though never in any great pain with it, my bowel probably just stretches until its had enough and then I 'go'.

But when I went for physio for my joints, had to do all these 'core stability' deep muscle exercises, pulling your lower tummy muscles in and pelvic floor exercises, to improve my sense of balance etc. I noticed an unexpected side effect - no.2's everyday!!
When I told my physio, she laughed, saying when they were at college learning and doing these exercises the same thing happened to them - couldn't keep off the loo.

So if I'm bunged up, I just start my core stability exercise regime again and it works - I must have really poor muscle tone down there!!

Get pulling in your lower tummy muscles!!
