Hello Dragon,

some doctors think it is and some don't. My son was diagnosed with HMS first and later with hypermobile EDS. Some people seem to get a diagnosis of EDS and HMS and others one or the other. It doesn't seem to be clear cut, and it depends which doctor you are talking to!

Hi Dragon

I asked this question when I went to see Dr Hakim in London a few months ago. He said that he considers them to be the same, but that it doesn't really matter if they are the same or not, as they are close enough. He went on to say that they need the same treatments and therapies, and that everyone ewith HMS/HEDS is affected in different ways, and to different degrees.

I liked this answer as he gave me his personal opinion (yes, they are the same) while at the same time saying that if someone else says they are not the same, that can be true as well.

I hope this helps

:bye:

In my experience, HMS can be a symptom of several different problems. Several of my OH's siblings have been diagnosed with HMS and AS. Whilst their joints are hypermobile and often painful, they don't exhibt other EDS symptoms such as velvety, stretchy skin, palpatations, etc. that a lot of us with HEDS suffer from. But to some doctors, it's seen as an EDS III case with fewer symptoms! :D Very confusing!

I have been reading a fair bit online about HMS/EDS and all its variations. I too am confused by the terminology used!
I guess the only real reason to know how best to describe a diagnosis, is which one is more likely to be recognised in regard to filling in forms for DLA and the like. Does the terminology make any difference to how a claim is treated?

Not sure it would help with DLA-but a certain prominent specialist once told me to use whichever title was approriate to get what you want -so its HMS to insurance companies etc and Hypermolie Ehlers Danlos syndrome when I want them to pay attention

Mad-but it works
