Tehe, just eaten a pack of jaffa cakes, now on to the donut!

Hannah, don't worry about having off food days, we all have them. I find snacking is the best way through them and just hope that the following day or two bring better luck and hungry thoughts

Snacking is a great idea. Any food is still calories. To make sure I try and get at least some vitamins down my neck (particularly important on off food days), I take multivitamin and mineral supplements and cod liver oil to try and help the old joints.
I wonder why only junk food appeals on bad days? Is that the same for everyone?

ps chocolate in no way counts as junk food .....

HI

I think this is a fantastic thread, maintaining muscle is so much more important for someone with hms as it will help stabilise the joints and assist in movement.

Some advise, your body can only absord 28.35 grams of protien an hour. and there is roughly 45 grams of protien in breast of chicken.

In order to gain weight in muscle do not eat huge meals or large amounts of protien, eat a portion of around 30 grams and always have some complex carbs with it as they are needed to process the protien or you can develop diabetes,

Weight gain is all about being diet smart, what i do is steam chicken, and keep it in container in the fridge and eat a sandwich every hour. I also drink one protien shake as though it was 2 meals half in one hour, then wait and hour to drink the other half, this sensible and doesnt over strain your organs as large amounts of protien is not healthy.

Plus the complex carbs are required as they release fuel through out the day slowly and they help process the protien, protien is important as it will help maintain and build new muscle tissue, its estimated that you require 0.75 grams of protien for every kg of body weight.

With hms our muscles need to work harder to do the same things as other people, this is due to the extra flexibility so its so important we get a good complex carb breakfast in an the correct amounts of protien.

for mass building you require roughly 1.8 grams of protien for ever kg of body weight.

lastly the goal should never be weight gain or weight loss alone, with our condition it should be achieving stability and strength and developing your muscles for that. your look and feel will come in time, and besides the way i see it looking good is an atitude.

don't worry naama, we all do it sometimes.

thanks for the tips Immy - sounds tricky but will give it a go.

I've not had the best of food weekends - since my last post, I have been in so much pain that I have been on all my pills plus extra and this has left me constipated and not hungry. Am hoping my appetite returns soon.

Im so sorry to hear that, i know how hard it can be, make sure your defintley drinking lots of water if your on meds. they say about 1.5 litres a day but really just try one glass when you feel like it, the problem is most people try and aim so high they end up giving up.

same thing for diet take it slow introduce small changes, once your used to doing it then introduce another,

with hms we dont eat because where hungry we eat because our bodies require , greater support for our muscles and tissues both for maintain and rebuilding,

if you need anyone to work out stats for of how much of what you need to eat, please email me,

Doh I lost some weight I had managed to put on but still have a flabby bit round my tummy
I weighed myself the other day for first time in a while and have fallen to just over eight stone. I should be about nine at least for my height. I have tried sit ups in the past to tone tummy but can't do these anymore without falling apart. Anyone any idea how to tone up my tummy? Does anyone else have really loose skin round their tummy? I gave birth eight years ago and this bit of my body never recovered  If I was loaded I would have my tummy tucked or something it's quite ghastly and gets worse as I get older and I'm only 29.

the problem is your trying to achieve 2 different things, both weight gain and weight loss, because the reason you are lacking in abdominal definition is because you have alittle fat there, stretching and yoga may help with tighting the skin it may not.

i have a freind who lost alot of weight she used exercises which toned loose skin ill ask her what she did.

there some myths which you first need to understand

1. doing sit ups will not give u a toned stomach
2 losing weight fast will get you abs

the plan

you need to lose fat generally before it starts thinning around your tummy, so cardio is the way , coupled with strength training and a good diet

key points take cardio very gently, why because when u feel the burn it means you have a lactic acid build up and lactic acid hinders the break down of fat molecules.

and fat is not released for burning for upto at least 20 mins, so start counting after you have been doing your cardio for 20 mins,

muscle burns more calories then fat! see your body to exist function to move needs energy , " calories" and as you sit and rest your body is still using energy " calories"

so you need to maintain more muscle as this will increase your metabolic rate, hence the importance of resistence training

lastly should your goal be geting to 9 stone? or should it be stability fitness good health and looking good, i hope this has helped i can go into more detail but ill write forever and make you sick.

heres the dilema u face

for weight loss u need to be less calories then u r using daily
and for weight gain u need to do the complete oposite

my advice look to gain muscle, you will lose your tummy in the process , gain weight too, but to do that you need to eat more not less;)

weight training!

Cheers Immy

It is an odd one having a flabby tum and the rest of my body skinny as a rake! I think it is more about strengthening muscle like you were saying. I'll keep you posted on how I get on.

Hi all..
I too have problem gaining weight. 164cm, 49kg, BMI 18.22 at this moment, it was 16.5 last Sept. I've started doing pilates again. Like Ruby, I have a bit of lower tummy that I want to get rid off & just want to tone the rest.

I dont do snacking, but i can eat 4-5 times a day. I loose weight very easily, and there are times when i just dont feel like eating for about a week each month... I dont eat red meat, only chicken, turkey and seafood. years ago I gained 9 kilo's in 3 months by eating 6 times a day, drinking slimfast as 'in between', but I dont want to do it anymore. I am hoping to gain at least 2-4 kilo's but it seems I could only manage to gain till I get to 50kg and it stuck and started to loose it again. Dont know how to get over the 50kg. Need help with it.

I read about creatine and HMS somewhere last year but could not really recall what it was all about (collagen? weight? both?). I was hoping that someone can point me to the right direction for this subject.

thanks
greige

hey greig ive been looking for creatine and hmsa, i have found some articles which talk about the relationship between arthiritus and hmsa, i would be careful to use it for anything other then its intended purpose which is to give you energy boosts for training,

keep in mind creatine strains you so you have to drink alot more water, i tried using it i found it gave me headaches,

in regards to weight gain, you have to try force feed yourself in the weeks your not eating, mate its so so bad for you to go a week or so with out food, i know its hard but even a smoothy helps.

i personally get the impression and i could be totally wrong, that its your activity level, your burning too much, so either move around less...lol which is not always good or eat more..lol if its muscular gain you want then you wil have to weight train too,

i can do the maths of how much protien and carbohydrate you need daily to increase muscle mass, ill do that tomorow for you i hope it helps.

take care
