6 year old only now getting symptoms?

Postby claram » Sat Jul 16, 2011 4:16 pm

I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right bit and might get told off for starting a new topic but couldn't find an answer to my question. My one year old son has been diagnosed with hypermobility (not the syndrome as yet) and has the special boots, is having physio etc. My question is- could my six year old daughter be getting her first symptoms now, or if she has hypermobility would I have always known about it? She is very fit and healthy, does Irish dancing, gymnastics, horse riding and swimming and has never hadany problems but for the last week her legs have been aching so bad in the evenings she can't even walk down the stairs! I've had to carry her cos she's been in tears because of the pain bless her. She is very bendy and was born with hip displasia. She was in a brace until she was 11 months but walked within two weeks of having the brace off and has hit all other milestones. She doesn't have any problems doing sports (her teacher has said she's exceptionally gifted across a range of sports) and it's only Bern in the last week that her legs have hurt in the evenings, could this be a sign that she may have hypermobility or am I reading too much into it because of my son. I've said she's to take it easy this weekend and not do any sport but she just can't sit still. Any advice would be great thanks x

You say your daughter is bendy and does gymnastics etc, this could be hypermobility due to her bending for sport etc but all children are bendy but some remain and get pain. I am an adult in my 40s and yet to be formally diagnosed but have bendy joints and have suffered years of pain. I have had many orthopaedic doctors treat me over the years but none pick it up until recently i mentioned my son and now they say i probably have. I would suggest getting your daughter checked. Does she have flat feet? My son does and gets severe pain if not using his insoles. Hope this is some help

Thanks for the response. She does have quite flat feet, but I'm not too sure exactly how flat they would have to be for them to be considered flat? I have a very high instep so anyone without a high an instep as me naturally looks quite flat footed to me. I'm seeing the consultant for my son again in September, and the physio in 3 weeks: I might just take my daughter with me and mention it, see what they say.

hi there :D
as it seems only her legs are hurting and she was born with hip displasia... it might be an idea to have her hips/displasia checked again as well...
cause hypermobility of a joint can be due to "too shallow joint sockets" or "too lax ligaments" (and in some it can be a combo of both)
as for "only now getting symptoms" - with regards to constant or bouts of pain as a symptom...quite a lot of "lucky" hypermobiles only get that at 30 or even 40  - basically it can hit you at any time

I only really started getting symptoms when I hit puberty. I was always twisting my ankle etc at primary school, was always tired, but it was only about the age of 11 or 12 that I started to get pain in my knees and occasional backache. Then when I hit 30 - my whole body decided to join in! Maybe her body has been compensating and holding everything together up till now but that its all getting a bit much for her legs now, and hopefully with a bit of specialised Physiotherapy she can get the control back and therefore reduce the pain. I also back up the insoles suggestion - we are going to get some for my son as they have made an unbelievable difference to the way I walk and the pain I get in my knees and ankles and feet. I hope you can get some help for her and she is better soon! x x
Finally diagnosed March 2011 after 20 years of hypochondria!!!

thanks everyone. I'll definitely mention it to the physio next time I'm there. I'd hate to think that she wouldn't be able to do all of the sports she currently does as she loves them so much, and she's very gifted. she'd hate to not be able to do even one of them.
