Sulphites

Postby bendyneck » Sat May 19, 2012 8:13 am

Hi I'm new here and don't yet have a formal diagnosis but I'd like to know if anyone else suffers with sulphites/sulphur dioxide? It is used as a preservative in many fruit/sugar based food products including wine and beer. I can't drink wine at all without feeling really ill. It also occurs naturally in some fruits like grapes so even wine which is advertised as having no added sulphur will have some in anyway. Would be really interested in your experiences.

I react very badly to this as well, gives me very bad migraines. I'm pretty sure sulphites are a known migraine trigger.

I'm another one who can't tolerate sulphites. It upsets my stomach and gives me a horrendous headache. Cutting them out made a big difference

"I think I have a problem with my joints..."
The heaviest thing I can carry is a grudge.

Me too, but very low or no added sulphites wine seems to be ok for me,there's a company called goodwineonline which lists the actual sulphite content for some of what they sell and gives a med/lo ,lo , v.lo rating to everything they stock.
There's also a very interesting article about chemicals in wine on their site.

Could be worth trying, even wine labelled organic can have up to
300ppm sulphites , the ones they sell with less than 10 ppm taste like they're good for me! Hope so for your sake but maybe I'm just lucky, it usually takes a whole glass of regular wine to make me feel ill, but I am one of those people who feels dizzy In the soap aisle at the supermarket so have a fair degree of chemical sensitivity,
Take care.
