Some advice please

Postby Bethwoo » Sun Jul 08, 2012 11:44 am

I have only been diagnosed Just over a week ago and looking for some advice. I broke my foot about four years ago. I stood up, and shattered the metatarsal, bone into 6 bits. I didnt go over on it, or slip, just stood up. Took ages to heal (pardon the pun), in the past few days I've been getting intermitant bursts of pain where the break was. I'll be fine, then get sudden stabbing pain in my foot. Lasts a couple of seconds then gently throbs. Today I've had trouble with my other leg, just feels weak and wobbly, like it's run a marathon and it's exhausted. I'm concerned that this is progressing rapidly and it's gonna get worse. My gp is on holiday, hes the only one at the practice who has any knowledge of the syndrome. Waste of time talking to the other docs.
Is this a common thing? Old injuries hurting and wobbly limbs. What can I do to make them stronger?
Thanks

My daughter had a spiral fracture of the fibula last oct. After 5,5 months in cast, she still experiences the same kind of pain you're describing. Are you on any anti inflammatory drugs? The orthopaedic surgeon told us that these can inhibit bone growth, so has been doing without them to try and build the bone back up.

Could the other leg be getting sore because you're trying to protect the old break? This also happened with my daughter, to the point where she now needs an op to fix the unbroken leg :wall:

Physio could probably help, but I would say it has to be a physio with understanding of HMS. Don't be afraid to go and speak to any of the GPs in the practice, it might educate them in the problems that HMSers have :)

Hah, one of the other doctors there asked me if I'd considered that it could be in my head...

Must be in my daughter's head too then. Cos she describes it just like you. In fact, she was getting the same pains in her previously broken rib/wrist today :/

Bone injuries can lead to arthritic changes. The opposite leg will hurt as you put extra pressure on it when limping.

Thank you all for taking time to reply, much appreciated. Still getting random pains and noticing other bits joining In. Maybe they just felt left out  doc has put me on duloxetine as its a kinda blanket drug and works on several bits of the syndrome too, like my fybromyalgia.
Have had to slap myself in the head every now and again. Every twinge has me thinking that this is the next bit that's gonna hurt. E.g. I've now got a really crunchy knee when I walk upstairs a d thought oh no. We've just sold our house and bought a townhouse! 3floors, 4 flights of stairs :duh:
Anyway. I just wanted to have a bit of a moan as I get really fed up with hurting. Thanks again fellow bendys

Hey Bethwoo firstly! it is not in your head! lol I have had random pain from old injuries before and decided it is down to my body not processing pain properly, one of the theories for bendies being in pain is that once our pain receptors have been turned on they don't turn off very well, hence old pain from old injuries. I've been on duloxiteen for a while now and its been great for me, I don't get much of the 'old' pain and my neuropathic pain is much reduced
